Melanie Palmer Quirky humorous print design with an Afro-Carib twist. Print/textiles, felt maker & knitwear designer obsessed with colour and creating fun characters

I have always had a love for colourful quirky print design and creating fun characters which is exactly what you will find in my online shop. As a child I made clothes for my Barbie dolls and sold them in the playground for 10p (not bad for a full length ballgown), this led me into a career in fashion & textiles specialising in print/surface decoration, knitwear and felt making. My work has been f

eatured in Italian Vogue and Trespass Magazine, I’ve had fashion shows at the Victoria & Albert Museum and have also shown at Somerset House and The Museum of London.

Full disclosure I haven’t put my Christmas tree up yet🤦🏾‍♀️
It was my birthday recently 🥳and the truth is I can’t even think about Christmas until I’ve had my birthday, it’s like me first then Christmas🎄

This month has just been a complete whirlwind, i’ve been in my own little bubble, illustrating, Christmas shopping, Christmas eating and thinking about putting decorations up.
Did you know there are only 9 days until Christmas? 😱Because I didn’t😂 and if you’re not even nearly ready to think about it forgive me. But where – has –the – time – gone?

Anyone else as late as me?

I had a lot of things to do today but you know what I did instead? No I didn’t take a nap😆
I wandered around aimlessly looking out of the window thinking it’s dark, it’s cold and it’s pouring down.🌧
Then I realise I should’ve just gone out for a bit… Or took a nap🤣

It’s the most wonderful time of the year🎉It’s a time for joy, togetherness oh and a time to reflect and to feel gratitude, although…

This season in particular expectations are high. We may want everything to be perfect but the truth is nothing is ever perfect. All we can do is try our best to make the most of the season and all its pleasures.

But for some this can also be a stressful time filled with high anxiety, pressure of commitments, high emotions both positive and negative which can be stress inducing.

Truth is there will just be some things we cannot control and maybe we shouldn’t want to. Let it be as they say.

Self-care and wellness should be something afforded to everyone. Maybe you take the weekend to do your favourite things with your favourite people, take an evening to watch your favourite movies and eat ALL the snacks, or take 30 mins to play around with that new make up you bought but haven’t gotten around to trying out yet or going for a walk.

Doesn’t really matter what it is, what matters is that you do take time for yourself to decompress, to reset the energy around you, to just be in your own space especially if things start to get a little too much.

If you are not the kind of person who feels you can ever do this maybe it’s more important for you to know that it is important for you specifically to take some time out💚

So this season I wanted to explore a few themes on self-care and wellness.
In the weeks leading up to Christmas I will be creating a mini wellness series.

Some of you may know I’ve been having issues with tension in my shoulder which is related to my visual impairment and the added stress put on my body because of it.
It’s one of the reasons why it’s taken so long to get this piece finished🪆

Learning to take time out to rest when your mind is buzzing with creative thoughts that need to be expressed is a work in progress also😅

What’s your favourite part of the holiday?

Argh😣 Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been nursing a sore shoulder, woke up one day and couldn’t move it.

After my problematic Halloween series🎃 (See previous posts for art work) I’ve been itching to start a new illustration but really haven’t been able to do anything much recently except rest my shoulder. It’s been a nightmare🤦🏾‍♀️ I get so restless when I have a new idea for a piece💡 I want to start work on it immediately, get it out of my system and on the page ASAP🤣
I know, I need to take the time it needs to heal especially as it’s tension related but it – is – so – hard! 😂

A couple of days ago it started to ease and I’m now working on a new holiday themed piece🎄which I’m hoping will be finished by Friday so look out for it👀

Here’s a little peek of some of the elements I’ve been working with on the new piece❄️

I saw this brilliant slogan which said “it’s a dress not a yes“ and I thought that’s it exactly. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing or what you’re not, it doesn’t give anybody an excuse to act or do whatever they want.

Video shows a tattooed Woman with dark hair walking against graffiti walls in an urban setting.
She wears a black pleated skirt and black T-shirt with a vintage style illustration with a witches cauldron. Inside the cauldron is bubbling acid green witches brew with smiley face emojis, unicorn horns, flowers and sugar and spice and all things nice.
Above the cauldron are the word toxic in hot pink dripping slimy text and etched into the cauldron is the word positivity.
Frameing the entire piece is an art nouveau style flower awning with pink tinged white flowers edged with gold gilding.

This is a toxic positivity awareness illustration.

This piece is a part of my problematic attitudes Halloween series.

I was thinking about toxic positivity and how it’s like a stew of sugar and spice and all things nice. It tells us to be nice, smile, don’t bring other people down, people have it far worse off than you and whatever you do don’t kill the vibe.

In my view these are all harmful responses which don’t allow people the opportunity to show how they feel in any given moment.
For the listener these responses can lead to feelings of shame, guilt And further depression and anxiety.

Often people saying these things are well-meaning and unaware of the impact these words may have. It’s okay to say you don’t really know what to say or how to respond in a situation rather than saying something which May come across as on feeling.

Nobody is perfect but maybe instead we can just simply listen, say that must be really difficult for you, let them know you’re here for them, let them know you hear them and keep the lines of communication open.

Black lives matter is not a threat it’s a cry for help.
I heard somebody say something similar on a TV programme and quite honestly it was like a punch in the guts because that’s exactly what it is… It’s a cry for help.
It’s a call for change, a cry for recognition.
Not a call to violence or a threat.
It says once and for all can we finally live in peace✊🏿

So do you hear it?
