Loving, loving ‘Loving’ by

This archive of vintage photographs of gay couples from the 1850’s - 1950’s is always pure joy to leaf through and I love thinking about how no matter how those individuals’ lives played out, for better or worse, it’s wonderful to see in these momentary snapshots nothing but encapsulations of freedom and love.

‘A Q***r Pilgrimage’ is an ongoing project that explores LGBTQ+ history through print based illustrations and accompanying texts.

Presented by q***r artists El Lanham and Tom Maryniak and inspired by their interests in printmaking, history and storytelling, this ongoing project seeks to cover a broad cross-section of the people and places that make up London’s rich LGBTQ+ history.

20. Hampstead Heath
A wild park of woodlands, excellent views of London and bushes alive with s*xual activity, Hampstead Heath is perhaps one of the most notorious gay cruising areas in Europe. Although the last few years has seen a number of attempts by the government to curtail cruising across the capital in general, from trimming bushes to closing parks in the evening, the popular pastime persists.

19. Tite Street

Tite Street in Chelsea has been brimming with q***rs throughout history.

Playing host to an array of artists and writers, it was at one time the epicentre for London’s artistic avant-garde. Oscar Wilde lived at number 34 with his wife, until his trial for gross indecency in 1895, while John Singer Sargent lived and worked at number 31. Artist Glyn Philpot kept a studio at number 33, le***an artist Romaine Brooks lived at number 50 after leaving her gay husband in Capri and ground-breaking author of The Well of Loneliness Radclyffe Hall, briefly lived at number 17.

18. Piccadilly Circus

In London, ‘A Dilly Boy’ is defined as ‘a young homos*xual or male pr******te who cruises ‘The Dilly’’, slang for Piccadilly Circus.

On the fringes of Soho, Piccadilly has long been London’s principle location for the illicit sale of s*x. Before the existence of online dating apps and CCTV, young men would congregate and hustle along the ‘meat rack’; the railings that used to surround the statue of Eros, where they’d wait to be picked up.

17. Albany

Throughout the 1890s Albany in Piccadilly was the home of poet and campaigner George Cecil Ives, who took set E4 and brought with him his live-in servant James Goddard, who tended to his domestic and s*xual needs. Dubbed ‘a dedicated homos*xual’ by Oscar Wilde, Ives was an early pioneer for homos*xual reform and in 1893 founded a secret homos*xual society called ‘The Order of Chaeronea.’ Depicted here is the rear entrance to Albany and ‘The Ropewalk’, as seen from Vigo Street.

16. Clarence House

Driven by both a deep love for the Queen Mother and an appetite for s*x, royal courtier William Tallon become infamously known as ‘Backstairs Billy’ and towards the tail end of his fifty year career at Clarence House, would spend evenings in Soho bars picking up men with the tantalising promise of a private tour back at the house. It was on one of these occasions that he invited a young man to take a seat on the Queen Mother’s favourite sofa, where he then proceeded to have s*x with him.

15. Whitehall Palace

King James I was described by historian Michael B. Young as “the most prominent homos*xual figure in the early modern period” and he took numerous male lovers throughout his life, the most famous of whom was George Villers, 1st Duke of Buckingham.
Buckingham once wrote to the king; “whether you loved me now… better than at the time which I shall never forget at Farnham, where the bed’s head could not be found between the master and his dog”.
