Norwood JunkAction

Norwood JunkAction Rooted in Norwood Junction, a multicultural area in South Croydon, Norwood JunkAction (NJA) was initiated by artist Norman Mine.

Norwood JunkAction is an environmental community project that aims to build alternative and educative ways of approaching the issue of litter by transforming it into art. Supported by the local community, it began as an eco-community project aimed at showcasing the efforts and motivations of community members involved in litter picking. NJA promotes litter-picking as a way to foster neighbourhood

connections, care for the environment, and engage in meditative action to enhance well-being. The project not only addresses litter issues in communal spaces but also celebrates individuals who volunteer their time for community service. A unique aspect of NJA is transforming collected litter into public sculptures, which reflect the experiences of volunteers and inspire others to engage creatively with social and environmental issues, fostering neighbourhood pride. Since its inception, NJA has evolved into a platform for volunteers, creatives, and community members to share ideas, opinions, and ambitions. The project explores the potential of litter to express contemporary social and environmental themes, encouraging discussions around art, creativity, community, waste, recycling, and environmental care. NJA invites everyone to think creatively in their daily lives, using creativity as a tool to overcome struggles.

Still buzzing from KIKI at Stanley Arts last night. ✨

The effects clearly lasted into this morning… that’s apparently how we do litter-picking on a Sunday 👀🔥

So great to have events like this in South Norwood, bringing energy, creativity and joy to our community.

If you see this post, please share it! There's no such thing as too many people willing to support the community, one bin bag at a time.

Thanks to everyone that came along.

Following concerns raised by residents, volunteers, community groups, and everyone who helped share and highlight the issue, the Grosvenor car park has now been cleared.

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to comment, report, share information, contact local representatives, and support the conversation. Change happens when people come together and make their voices heard.

The video shows the scale of the challenge we were facing just a short time ago.

The space is now litter-free, and we hope it stays that way.

The real question is: how do we keep it that way?

Any suggestions? 👀

Thank you for being part of the journey 💙🧡

🌿 Volunteers’ Week 🌿

This week we want to thank everyone who has been part of the Norwood JunKAction journey.

Whether you joined us once, come every week, shared an idea, offered support, helped create structure, made a donation, or simply spread the word, you have helped make Norwood JunKAction what it is today: a community-led organisation built on care, action, and connection.

Every bag collected, every conversation shared, every suggestion made, and every hour given has helped build a stronger community.

To all our volunteers, partners, supporters, and neighbours: thank you. We couldn’t do it without you 💙🧡

Together with Stanley Arts, we’re inviting local residents to join us for a community discussion, mapping session, creative activities, and outdoor action focused on Grosvenor Gardens and the surrounding area.

Led by our passionate local resident Henry 🙌

For years, volunteers and residents have tried to care for this area, but the challenges continue. We believe long-term change can only happen through stronger community connections, shared responsibility, and ongoing local involvement.

If you care about the future of South Norwood and want to be part of the conversation, we’d love to see you there 💙🧡
