MARTHA ARGERICH - HOMAGE À JACQUELINE DU PRÉ

Martha Argerich, one of the world’s greatest musicians and pianists of all time, has cherished a deep and abiding admiration for Jacqueline du Pré ever since they first met in the 1960s.

It is with profound pride that we share in a rare exclusive to Jacqueline du Pré Official her loving tribute to “Jackie.”

We are forever grateful to Ms. Argerich for the warm generosity of her precious gift: a heartfelt remembrance from one of music’s supreme artists to another, offered with enduring affection and love.

Homage a Jacqueline du Pré — Gautier Capuçon

The celebrated French cellist Gautier Capuçon has made no secret of his admiration and love for Jacqueline du Pré in the past.

Here, we are delighted to repost his most beautiful tribute of the beloved cellist (which we first published on this page in 2017).

We wish to extend our thanks and deep appreciation to Mr. Capuçon for allowing us to share his words again here.

EXCLUSIVE TO JACQUELINE DU PRÉ OFFICIAL —
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Jacqueline du Pré and Daniel Barenboim, ca. 1970.

The great German baritone was an enormous admirer of Jacqueline du Pré. They first met in Italy after he attended a recital of the du Pré-Barenboim duo in January 1969 and once said of her: „Sie ist die einzige Instrumentalistin, die das Legato beherrscht und auf dem Cello wahrhaft singen kann“ / “She is the only instrumentalist who possesses a real legato and can truly sing on the cello.”
High praise indeed, coming from one of the greatest singers of all time!

Du Pré and Fischer-Dieskau, alongside Daniel Barenboim and Pinchas Zukerman, worked once together, performing Beethoven’s folk song arrangements for the bicentennial of the composer’s birth in 1970 at the Southbank Centre.
Further performances between du Pré and Fischer-Dieskau (as soloist and conductor, respectively) were planned for the autumn of 1973, but these had to be sadly cancelled due to her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 1973.

This rare and wonderful photo comes courtesy of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s son Manuel Fischer-Dieskau, himself a renowned cellist and professor, and to whom we extend our sincere gratitude!

‘Jackie was here’ —
A historic commemorative Blue Plaque for one of Jacqueline du Pré’s former London flats in Marylebone.
She lived in the basement apartment between 1967 and 1971.
