HOMMAGE À JACQUELINE DU PRÉ — HAN-NA CHANG

The stupendous South-Korean conductor Han-Na Chang — who first stunned the music world as an international cello soloist at age 11 — is a true admirer of Jacqueline du Pré’s artistry since her childhood.

We are most grateful to Ms. Chang for the privilege of being able to share her tribute to du Pré, exclusively here on Jacqueline du Pré:

‘I was around eight years old when my parents bought a Laser Disc of Christopher Nupen’s documentary on Jacqueline du Pré, in which she also performed the complete Elgar cello concerto with Daniel Barenboim for me to watch. It was the first time I heard the Elgar, and also my first time seeing her playing.

It was a total shock: I watched and listened, glued to the TV, as if hypnotized. Even as an eight year-old, one thing was immediately clear to me: She was the music.

She wasn’t just playing the cello - she was speaking directly to me, telling me the most beautiful and wonderful story in the music. It was a transformative experience for me - she taught me and opened my eyes to what it means to be a performing artist, what ‘true communication’ in music making is between performer and the audience, what it means to be a totally committed, immersed, convincing and mesmerizing champion for the composer and for the Music.

Once I got to know her and her Elgar, I bought every CD I could find of her. Every interpretation, every performance of du Pré is unforgettable for being unmistakably her - she was such an honest and sincere musician.

Every note, she meant it & lived to the full. The first time I watched the documentary-performance film of The Trout, I remember being so fascinated by her as a person.

Knowing the absolutely heartbreaking course of her life, and the extraordinary amount of music making she created in such a short career, the person of du Pré always held such a fascination for me.

Her honesty to her own musical identity, and her commitment to the Music in the moment of music making - the authenticity and absolute commitment - and the Joy that she lived and shared in the Music!!!

These qualities are for me the most essential requirements in a musician. She was one of the first musicians whose recordings I got to know in my early childhood who so forcefully and undeniably embodied these qualities.

When I think du Pré, I immediately think of two things, namely the Power of Music to move people’s hearts, and the Joy of Music.
That truly sums up who she is for me.’

In Memoriam Katharine, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent
22 February 1933 – 4 September 2025

Katharine, the Duchess of Kent, has passed away at the age of 92. One of Jacqueline du Pré’s beloved friends, she led an exemplary and inspiring life with authenticity, compassion, dignity and grace, intensively involving herself in charity work for the young, the elderly, the disabled and the disadvantaged.

A bona fide sports fan, she will also be remembered by many as a familiar figure at the Wimbledon tennis championships, where she handed over trophies - and famously consoled a tearful Jana Novotna in 1993.
But music was her true lifelong passion for the Duchess - whose taste ranged from choral music, her friend Jackie’s cello playing, to rap music - and in later life, she taught music for 13 years at a primary school in Hull, where students simply called her ‘Mrs Kent’ (not realising her real identity as a royal).

Talking about her friendship with Jacqueline du Pré in on the BBC radio show ‘Desert Island Discs’ in 1990, she remarked, “She was a very lovely person and I visited her most weeks [when du Pré was ill]… I personally think I was very lucky to have been with her just a very few hours before she died. I was able to share a few of those last moments with her. If I was to have one piece of music played by Jacqueline, it has to be the Elgar Cello Concerto[...] I think it’s true in saying that Pablo Casals, when asked to teach her, said ‘there is nothing I can teach her. She knows it all. She is just a born musician’.
And what a sadness to all of us that she died so young.”

HRH The Duchess of Kent - who was the oldest member of the British Royal Family at the time of her passing - will forever be remembered for her human and empathetic kindness she showed countless people through many causes she championed, and we mourn the loss of a beautiful human being.

Requiescat in Pace.
