Chemu Ng’ok
‘Those We Remember or Are Yet to Meet’

Goodman Gallery Cape Town
Until 19 September 2026

While informed by the swirl of thoughts and emotions prompted by lives in transition, Ng’ok’s new paintings remain consistent with her broader ambition to transform psychological states into physical form.

During the production of these works in Nairobi, she kept a journal closely linked to her practice. Its entries emerged as lean, aphoristic reflections. “A lot of my practice is rooted in making the intangible idea real or a physical presence,” she wrote. “Painting is making fleeting moments real, anchoring them into a physical archive.” Elsewhere, she describes her paintings as rendering “that which is experienced in real time – a memory, a longing, a feeling, a trace – onto the canvas in the form of lines, coding, dashes, commas.”

Last days to view Ernest Cole in NYC [◉¯]

“His photographs from this era show him searching for a place to not merely live, but to thrive,” writes Leslie M. Wilson in ‘The True America’. “And being the astute, highly attuned observer that he was, he quickly recognized what America could not give him and what it struggled to give other Black people, not only in terms of opportunity, but in a fundamental sense of home and care and safety. They also show what Black Americans made, what they held onto in the face of those conditions. And they show the communities where Cole was trying to find new people and places and things and ideas to try to hold on to.”

Goodman Screenings
Naama Tsabar

This month’s Goodman Screenings presents ‘Transitions #5’, filmed during Naama Tsabar’s first solo exhibition with Goodman Gallery and in the UK in 2021, alongside excerpts from her institutional exhibition ‘Estuaries’ (2024) at Hamburger Bahnhof.

“I don’t like authority, to be framed – restricted. These works break the borders that were set for them... they are in constant states of transition.” – Naama Tsabar, 2021

Created in collaboration with musicians, the performances activate Tsabar’s sculptural works through sound and movement, dissolving the boundaries between visual art, music and audience participation.

Last days to view in Cape Town 🌆

Misheck Masamvu
‘Naked’

Goodman Gallery Cape Town
Until 11 July 2026

“The sunset is not just one event, because it’s like a time-lapse. When you are willing to actually see that gradual change, sometimes it speaks to how you are unwinding within your own day, or lived experience. And colour for me does the same. I find colour sometimes gives you entry points to different things.”

“I like to think of it as the opera house is inviting you to make a drawing in four dimensions over two hours. They give you a canvas that’s 17 meters by eight meters and they give you two hours to develop it. And they give you some of the greatest music, and singers and a projector and lighting designer, and costumes… And through this you make this drawing that expands in height and width and depth and time. So that’s how I think of these operas, as a drawing in four dimensions that unfolds.” – William Kentridge on his approach to staging Monteverdi’s ‘L’Orfeo’ at Glyndebourne Festival in East Sussex.

🎟️ Tickets for ‘L’Orfeo’ are limited but remain available for selected performances throughout July. Explore via the link in bio.

Unathi Mkonto’s solo ‘If Joburg had a beach, who would go?’ continues in our Johannesburg gallery ⋆˚࿔

Here, Mkonto describes the evolution of his work, from drawing to structure, to formulating the legacy of a new language in sculptural form.

“There’s a force in water that is invisible, and that force becomes structure, and that becomes space, and that becomes architecture, which is made of structures. And structures for me here would be a river and a fountain and a tower in the middle of the ocean. The idea that ‘If Joburg had a beach, who would go?’ for me, relates to how one could make time in their day, to make time to go to the beach. And who gets to go to the beach? And who has time to go to the beach? Some parts of our history cannot be said, they can only be illustrated in form. I think there’s so much art and writing that’s been made of our country and our history of apartheid. My contribution is through form and the legacy of building a language in form.”
