After a week of fighting with a broken laptop, finally managed to finish of 'Mother Earth' challenge.

Whales in Baja California Mexico

During the months of December to early April, something incredible happens in Baja California: almost the entire world's population of grey whales, humpacks and 2-3,000 blue whales migrate to its shallow lagoons to socialise, mate and give birth. Rivaled only by the Galapagos, the world's second largest peninsula is a paradise for marine mammals - and a must-visit for those in search of one of the most spectacular wildlife-spotting experiences on our planet.

Life

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

In this week's challenge, I have decided to draw my daughter, who was born 5 months ago. It's incredible how life works - we grown, learn and adapt so quickly when we're young, and every little thing seems so exciting. Our brains work at such a high capacity and our mind is so flexible. That seems to change as our life passes - that freedom in our mind becomes restricted by social norms, we become too used to our environment and too scared to make changes. We estimate happiness based on comparisons and find things less exciting than they were when we were kids. There's no harm in trying to look at life sometimes the way children do and be more appreciative of what we have, because we are lucky to be alive on this beautiful planet! We should be grateful for that every moment and we should raise our children to be good humans - protect the environment and be kind to each other.

Victoria falls

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

Victoria falls is one of the biggest and most awe-inspiring waterfalls on the planet.
Spanning the width of the Zambezi River - more than a mile across - this legendary waterfall cascades over the lip of a large plateau of volcanic rock and plunges as much as 354 feet. It generates mists that can be spotted from more than a dozen miles away, which is why locals have dubbed it Mosi-oa-Tunya, or "the smoke that thunders".

But while the flow has been slicing slowly through this plateau on the national border between Zambia and Zimbabwe for some two million years, extreme swings in rainfall brought on by climate change threaten its future.

'Monarch butterfly migration'

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

Monarch butterfly migration is the phenomenon, mainly across North America, where the subspecies Danaus plexippus migrates each summer and winter to and from overwintering sites on the West Coast of California or mountainous sites in Central Mexico. Other subspecies perform minor migrations or none at all. The massive movement of butterflies has been called 'one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world'.

'Waitomo Glowworm Caves'

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves attraction is a cave at Waitomo on the North Island of New Zealand. It is known for its population of Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm species found exclusively in New Zealand.

The name 'Waitomo' comes from the Maori words wai, water and tomo, hole or shaft. Geological and volcanic activity has created around 300 known limestone caves in the Waitomo region over the last 30 million years.

The limestone formation in the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occurred when the region was still under the ocean about 30 million years ago. The limestone is composed of fossilized corals, seashells, fish skeletons, and many small marine organisms on the sea beds.

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

The chameleon, scientific name Chamaeleonidae, is a species of lizard. There are over 160 species of these lizards spread across Madagascar, Spain, Africa, Asia, and Portugal. They have large eyes, a curled tail, and some species can change the color of their skin to blend in with their surroundings as a defense mechanism from predators.

Borneo

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

The place that holds the largest potential for new discoveries is the Heart of Borneo. It harbours large and continuous tracts of virgin montane forest, much of which remains unexplored.

Borneo is home to some of the largest and most magnificent hornbill species, many of which are endangered. The Rhinoceros Hornbill has a very distinctive, brightly coloured casque on top of its beak, and each individual's eye colour allows you to determine its s*x - male's eyes are red and females' are white.

The Miller's Grizzled Langur is a rare monkey species with bristly sideburns and it has been 'rediscovered' in a forest in northeastern Borneo. It has a dark face and unmistakably pure-white sideburns which is why it's called the Dracula Monkey.

Flamingos in Lake Natron, Northern Tanzania

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

Located in Northern Tanzania, Lake Natron is the 'it' spot for Lesser Flamingos.
Although many plants and animals eschew the waters, which frequently reach the temperatures above 40° C and are so alkaline as to burn skin, it's paradise for flamingos, where the high salinity just means more food. Roughly 75% of the Lesser Flamingos are hatched at the lake, and tourists flock to see the incredible 'pink parade' that results when flamingos strut around doing there mating dance.

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

Cormorant fishing is a traditional method in which fishermen use trained cormorants to fish in rivers. Historically, cormorant fishing has taken place in Japan and China, as well as Greece, Macedonia, France and England.

Every year, thousands of tourists visit the Japanese city of Gifu to watch this type of fishing called 'ukai'. Each cormorant is first leashed around the neck and then released to dive into water. If the bird makes a catch, it's then scooped up, and the fisher pulls the fish from the bird's mouth. The tie around the cormorant's neck ensures that the biggest fish don't get swallowed, but allows the bird to swallow small fish. Actor Charlie Chaplin once described cormorant fishing as 'Japan's highest art form'.

Ukai fishers defend their treatment of the birds, comparing tethering the cormorants to tying dogs to leashes. This method of fishing, however, does provoke questions regarding welfare of the birds. Matsuo Basho, a 17th century Japanese poet, seems to express sympathy for the birds in this Haiku:

Delightful, and yet
Presently how saddening,
The cormorant boats.

Redwood forest
of 'Mother Earth' challenge

Giant sequoias and California redwoods are nature's skyscrapers. These enormous trees exist primarily in Northern California, Oregon and Washington and though they have a number of common characteristics, including distinctive cinnamon-red bark, they are different species. Redwoods reach heights of more than 350 feet (107 m). The tallest tree in the world is named Hyperion, which reaches 379.7 feet (115.7 m).

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

Octopuses are playful, resourceful, and inquisitive. Some species cuddle with one another, while others have been known to bond with humans. They are among the most highly evolved invertebrates and are considered by many biologists to be the most intelligent. They possess long-term and short-term memories, similar to vertebrates, and pass their personality traits on to their offspring.
