This year, Scotland + Venice will present Bugarin + Castle’s Shame Parade curated by Mount Stuart Trust in Olivolo, a space in San Pietro di Castello just a short walk from the
Arsenale and Giardini.

Here, Davide Bugarin talks about the architecture of this space and sculptures within it, accessed from the main square while Angel talks about the trapdoor that appears in the work ‘Set Upon’, as well as being a feature at Mount Stuart and appearing in the film ‘Submit to Sound’.

“The word ‘Trap’ has been used as a slur against trans people but here we take the trap door as a moment of danger, of sudden drop. An opportunity to emerge and to become something else, an opportunity to change course in a non-linear direction.”- Angel Cohn Castle

With the year drawing to a close, the Forma team would like to express our deepest thanks and appreciation to the artists, collaborators, local residents, and volunteer gardeners who made 2024 so inspiring and enjoyable.
As a team that thrives on experimentation and exploring new ways of collaborating, we’ve had a busy and fulfilling year delivering a dynamic programme across London and beyond.

Lawrence Lek won the 2024 Frieze Artist Award, Forma’s flagship co-commission with Frieze, with his groundbreaking ‘Guanyin: Confessions of a Former Carebot’. Oliver Frank Chanarin’s ‘A Perfect Sentence’ toured to KARST; Images Vevey; and Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Alberta Whittle’s powerful ‘Lagareh – The Last Born’ was restaged and acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland before touring to Regen Projects in LA. Adham Faramawy’s ‘And these deceitful waters’ continued its journey to Berlin’s Creamcake and Focal Point in Southend.
2024 marked the first year that Forma convened Artists’ Film International, which toured to four continents reaching thousands of audiences.

At FormaHQ we hosted over 40 public events, from discussions on radical pedagogy and planting sessions to mending workshops, performances and screenings. We were especially proud to present our first full-scale exhibitions in the building, including ‘don’t worry i won’t forget you’, curated by Êvar Hussayni and Sarah Hamed. Their interactive library transformed FormaHQ with a rich collection from the WANAWAL, materials from the Kurdish Cultural Centre, and works by more than eight celebrated artists. In September we presented AFI, opening with a live score of Nadeem Din-Gabisi’s ‘MASS’, alongside screening events, a radio broadcast and poster commission.

Looking ahead we will shortly be announcing some major new initiatives for 2025 which will broaden our reach across London and create even more opportunities for our artists and collaborators.

As we prepare to spend time with our loved ones, our hearts are turned towards the people of Palestine, Ukraine, Syria, and South Sudan. We cannot imagine a peaceful future until there is justice for all.

With gratitude and hope,
Chris & the Forma team

💥 NEW IN 💥

Chronologies of Creamcake
Ed. by Creamcake & Steph Kretowicz

Founded by Daniela Seitz and Anja Weigl in 2011, established itself as a platform, collective, and label for a progressive club sound at the intersection of electronic music, performance, contemporary art, and digital technologies.

‘Chronologies of Creamcake’ recalls the initiative’s platform idea, themes, concerts, exhibitions, symposia, performances, digital projects, and, not least importantly, a chapter in the history of interdisciplinary music and club culture. The book illustrates Creamcake’s extraordinary approach with photographs, flyers, posters, and other documentation from the archives collaged together.

It features commissioned texts by some of the scene’s most prominent and articulate voices, including: Selim Bulut, Jared Davis, Karlynne Ejercito, Adam Harper, Michelle Hooq, Susanne Huber, Vika Kirchenbauer, Rianna Jade Parker, Alex Quicho, Ashkan Sepahvand, Maxi Wallenhorst, McKenzie Wark, Geo Wyex, and Hengameh Yaghoobifarah.

Published by and designed by it’s stunning - an absolute dream gift for a friend or for winter break reading.

Coming up in 2025! 📚

The Cesspool of Rapture: a book launch and screening
With Joseph Noonan-Ganley, Seán Elder, Linda Stupart, and Sharon Kivland

30 January 2025
19:00 - 22:00

Forma is delighted to host the publication launch of Joseph Noonan-Ganley’s ‘The Cesspool of Rapture, Artist’s Texts 2012-2024’ by Ma Bibliothèque. Join
us at FormaHQ for an evening of readings, a screening and conversational responses to the book from Seán Elder and Linda Stupart, introduced by Sharon Kivland.

‘The Cesspool of Rapture’ is a collection of Joseph Noonan-Ganley’s writing from 2012 to 2024, structured by three themes and contexts that emerged during the process of assembling the texts: STUDIO, UNIVERSITY, and EXHIBITION, with responses by Simon Watney, Sarah Tripp, and Tom Dillon.

‘The Cesspool of Rapture is a collection of more than ten years of complex, intensive grappling with art, language, flesh, and material by a remarkable voice intent on coming to grips (embracing/holding/tackling) with the world
around him. Noonan-Ganley muddies boundaries between self and other, theory and practice, fabric and bodies, clay and dirt, in a constitutive q***ring of art and visual culture—where the pleasure of the reader ignites in every
moment that “the encounter takes hold”’.

- Linda Stupart

The book will be available to purchase from Presse Books following the
launch.

SAVE THE DATE: ‘Educastration’, a work-in-progress screening at FormaHQ by M Lissoni

19:00 - 21:00
23 January 2025
FormaHQ, London

Free, RSVP at the link in our bio ❤️

Forma is delighted to be presenting a work-in-progress screening of Educastration. Educastration is a new video essay by Forma Studio holder M Lissoni that delves into the intersections of race, gender, and power through a critical visual investigation of body surveillance and medicalisation. Drawing from archival imagery of cosmetic advertising, medical texts, and media representations, this project collates visual and historical materials, questioning theopolitical mechanisms of control and othering.

The title ‘Educastration’ pays homage to Italian philosopher Mario Mieli (Towards a Gay Communism, 1977), whose work within the q***r liberation movement in the 1970s sought to subvert normative structures and rethink the politics of desire and identity. ‘Educastration’ seeks to extend that lineage by interrogating the educational and disciplinary functions of media and history in forming what we consider normative.

The screening will be followed by a short Q&A and a curated display of artists’ books and texts that have informed the research, carefully selected by STIGMATA, an independent publishing and curatorial platform established by Lissoni earlier this year.

💌The first 20 people to RSVP will also receive a limited edition paper invitation in the post, hand made by M 💌

For more information on the project and M’s wider practice through STIGMATA head to forma.org.uk or mlissoni.com.

As always, share with friends & we’ll see you there!
