This weekend a most strange, eccentric and madly British ritual will be taking place in Westminster Abbey 👑

At Captain Baby we 💓 rituals, especially the collective ones. A group of people coming together to perform a set of actions with a common purpose? Yes. Please.

We like to weave a bit of ritual magic into all of our experiences, events and ideas. Whether it’s a group dance routine 👯‍♀️, a cheers 🍻 or a lighting a candle 🕯️, Captain Baby experiences include ritual moments to bring meaning, joy and a sense of belonging.

So however you’re planning to spend this bank holiday weekend, I hope you’ll be performing your own collective rituals with your chosen people.

🎉 I’m in today’s Evening Standard talking about the rise of the mega-30th (link in bio)

🎈I love birthdays. I love my own, I love everyone else’s, and I love helping people create their perfect celebration.

🎂I find the ritualistic markers of birthday - the cards , the song, the candles - quite beautiful.

💖 They make us feel loved and they mark the passage of time, and both of those things are super important.

What I've noticed recently, is that people (myself included) are prepared to go next level for their 30ths, and I think that's wonderful. Best of all, the reason is often wanting to get everyone together, to reconnect, or to say thanks to friends and family. Celebrate yourself, while celebrating your community.

✨ My 30th was a cult-themed utopia, where we all dressed the same, Sink the Pink DJd and we all learnt a dance routine to Black Box's Ride on Time. I can't do it every year, but I wish I could.

When we started creating Friend Mapping, one of the first things we knew was that we wanted this experience to take place around a table.

Tables are a central piece of furniture in our homes, and the site of so many important conversations, and around them many friendships are made, strengthen and broken.

🍽️

We always imagined people would enjoy Friend Mapping after gathering together for dinner (although you can play anytime!), so when you set up the for the experience everything looks neat and orderly. But by the end… beautiful chaos.

Sarah Wigglesworths ‘The Disorder of the Dining Table’ (img 1) was one of our first pieces of inspiration. She maps the transition from a beautifully ordered set table, to an abandoned post-consumption disorder.

Next time you share a meal with friends, before you clear away your plates, or leave the restaurant, take a look at your table just before you abandon it, and marvel at the mess and all the conversations that took place to create it.

Incredible Nick Cave and his fascinating, iconic Sound Suits. These surreal objects, which blend fashion and sculpture stemmed from a reaction to the 1991 Rodney King riots in LA. The first was a suit made of twigs, and the materials and forms have developed over the years. Cave has described them as metaphorical suits of armour, allowing viewers to look without bias towards the wearer’s identity.

These beautiful works of art allow the imagination to run wild and free, and no more so when they are seen in performance. Have a look on YouTube for some truly mesmerising footage.

Helllooo 👋🏻 👋🏻

This is Zeb, Captain Baby's founder and the person behind these posts.

I started Captain Baby a couple of years ago to create a new form of immersive entertainment that makes you FEEL GOOD. Influenced by my big love for theatre, connection and design I dreamt of creating large-scale immersive environments, designed to empower and inspire people through live performance.

The pandemic put a halt to those plans, and I had to pivot. I thought, how can I take the essence of my idea, and shrink its form to something people can enjoy in their homes? Then came Party Inside, an uplifting lockdown night in shared by households across the country. A theatrical evening in a box, filled with surprises, activities, treats, interactions and more...

Since then I've been developing a series of at-home feel-good celebrations. We've just released Friend Mapping, a table-top immersive experience that celebrates the magic of friendship, which is available now on our website.

I work solo most of the time, which can be lonely and is definitely not the best conditions for creativity. But I'm happiest when collaborating. Captain Baby will be working on our next at home experience shortly, and cooking up some ideas for in-person events.

I'm always on the lookout to meet new people and collaborators, so please get in touch if you're interested in a collaboration, or a coffee and a chat.
