Day 2
'My inspiration'

My inspiration comes from from rural Hampshire, Where I grew up influenced by plants, colours, textures, and the changing seasons.
I love to be able to go running or walking deep in the countryside as I find this a meditative way to connect with my art.

As a college student I started working in the Tea Room of Chawton House some years before studying for my degree at Hampton Court Palace. I love the stories, history and craftsmanship connected to historical buildings and spent time exploring the extensive grounds.

I also developed a love of botanical illustration whilst researching for my final project - I was privileged to use the historical botanical illustration books from the library at Chawton House.

I often find myself drawn to historical art movements from Regeny and Chinoiserie to the Arts and Craft movement & from medieval art to Modernism.

I am super excited to have been selected as .amaker member. This week is Find a Maker Week I will be posting with their prompt today is 'My Story'.

My name is Emily I am a textiles artist and Hand Embroidery specialist, currently living in Hampshire.
I discovered a passion for textiles in secondary school and for my final project found out about freehand machine embroidery.I loved the freedom detail through the stitches.
I developed this and an interest in interior textiles through college. Following the advice of my college tutor I applied for a place on a hand embroidery degree at the Royal School of Needlework.

I started my degree at Hampton Court Palace in the September of 2019 unfortunately my first year would coincide with the Covid Pandemic. Which impacted my first and second years.

However I did have a great thrid year at The Royal School of Needlework.
During my time at uni I had the opportunity to work on King Charles III's Annoiting screen for the Corrination, for Alexander McQueen and Fromental.

I graduated with a First Class degree. My final collection 'The Chawton House Project' consisted of three 2 meter hand embroidered panles which took approximately 1500 hours to complete. I was inspired by Chawton House an Elizabethan manor house in Hampshire I worked as a waitress in their Tea Room as a student. This project recieved the Broderers Associate Award at Hand and Lock The Prize 2023.

After graduating I worked for three months as an intern at Sanderson design studio creating embroidery samples and designs for their Shears Collection, which released in February.
I also held my first solo exhibition in the summer of 2024, showcasing my graduate collection incollaboration with Chawton House.
I have recently completed a six month internship at the Royal School of Needlework Embroidery Studio where I have worked on several projects as well as learning some of their restoration and conservation techniques.

This year I have held some workshops and doing commission work. Looking forward to growing my own practice and seeing where my path takes me.
