Starting September with a wonderful 30th Birthday message from the mighty Keith Saha full of memories of The Broke n Beat Collective.

“It’s hard to choose one overriding memory from my work with Theatre-Rites.

Ive now been lucky enough to collaborate with Sue now on three different shows.

But, if I had to choose one, it would be co-creating the hip-hop puppetry show The Broke ’N’ Beat Collectivewith Theatre-Rites and 20 Stories High in 2016, particularly the character, puppet and story of Paper Girl.

She grew from conversations with young people in Liverpool who wanted part of the show to explore self-harm. And so, Paper girl was born; an origami, anime inspired full size puppet. Together, we explored her backstory, the challenges she was swimming in, and ultimately her journey towards healing and becoming an activist for other young people who might share her experiences.
The young people guided us throughout the process, making sure Paper Girl represented what they wanted to explore with authenticity, care and wellbeing. My overriding memory is of them witnessing their story being held onstage and shared with a wider audience. It felt like such an important moment.

We ended with the empowering song, “We’re broke but not broken, beat but not beaten.” The show reached young people across the country and travelled to the Ruhrtriennale in Germany. Wherever we took it, the response to felt universal.

For me, Paper Girl remains a beautiful example of how puppetry can hold painful stories with tenderness, imagination and hope.

Thanks to the talented and lovely M A R K U S S C H A B B I N G puppeteer, performer and director from Germany, for sharing his 30th birthday memories with us.

30 years of Theatre-Rites. 30 years of groundbreaking, inventive, moving, funny and visually stunning theatre.

I count myself very lucky to have been a small part of it. When I first auditioned for them almost 10 years ago, I had no idea what a beautiful, creative, and rewarding journey lay ahead of me.

The first production we made together was The Welcoming Party, a site-specific, interdisciplinary, immersive production for the Ruhrtriennale, created with a team from all over the world. To this day, it remains one of those truly special, one of a kind experiences. It opened up a whole new understanding of theatre for me. How to approach it, how to think about it.

One of the things I admire most about Theatre-Rites is their ethos: to make theatre that doesn’t exclude children. They take on difficult subjects that others might consider unsuitable, and treat them with such care, while maintaining a scale and visual sophistication that is both moving and spectacular. There’s no real distinction between theatre for children and theatre for adults. It’s just great theatre.

And they truly embodied that for example with The Welcoming Party and The Incredible Tale of Robotboy.

Over the years, I’ve learned so much from Sue about how to approach theatre, how to listen to a puppet or an object, how to treat a puppet character in rehearsal and in the devising process, and how to make space for it. She’s helped me open my mind to what a puppet can be, and how artists from different disciplines can come together to create something magical.

I’m so grateful to have been a small part of this over the past ten years—and, if I’m honest, a little bit proud too.

A lovely 30th message from the lovely Director and CEO of and former Theatre-Rites’ Trustee.

Sometimes we see for ourselves those beautiful moments of impact on our audiences (child and adult) but often they are more intangible so it’s a joy when people share these memories.





One of my stand out memories of Theatre-Rites was taking my daughter to see Zoe’s Peculiar Journey Through Time. She was captivated and incensed. She came out brimming with energy, announcing the many ways she planned to save the world. She was 4 at the time. This is the magic of Theatre-Rites - they weave together imagination and challenge, they balance playful and political, they merge genres, delight and inspire. They have such a profound skill in drawing out the childlike wonder in adults and encouraging deep connection and sparky rebellion in our children. They are an extraordinary company.

Mon 24 Aug to Sun 27 Sep 2026 (5 consecutive weeks)
Mon 19 Oct - Sun 08 Nov 2026 (3 consecutive weeks)
plus sporadic bookings between 24 Aug and 08 Nov.

You should have at least 2 years professional stage management experience and have experience of
using QLab.
You must hold a clean driving licence and be willing to
drive a small van with props, puppets, dance mats and any necessary equipment to each presenting venue
/ space on tour.
The Touring Stage Manager will be required to attend rehearsals full time.
