One year ago today, Materialists arrived in cinemas.

Recorded at Angel Studios by The Chamber Orchestra of London , Daniel Pemberton’s masterful score moves effortlessly between delicate intimacy and mounting tension, creating a rich emotional soundscape that sets the film apart within the genre.

Speaking about the score, Director Celine Song asked Pemberton for something “dark and complicated”. The restrained use of music throughout the film allows moments of silence to resonate more deeply, making each orchestral swell all the more powerful.

We’re proud to have played a small part in this beautiful score.

Accompanying the release of her 2024 album ‘Digital Heartifacts’, rising singer-songwriter L Devine came into Angel Studios to film and record the 6 song live EP, the ‘Abbey Road Sessions’, as part of the Equalise programme.

“We recorded 24 incredible string musicians in a studio called Angel Studios in London, and they were phenomenal. It’s kind of like this living entity on the album, this orchestra. They kind of come in and come out, and they push and pull and there’s moments of levity, and then there’s moments of tension.” Tom Odell

The strings feature throughout Tom Odell’s sixth studio album ‘Black Friday’, adding a refined sense of depth and atmosphere. Recorded in a single day at Angel Studios in May 2023 and conducted by Vincent Ott, the violins, violas and cellos give the record a sense of scale that underpins the raw emotion and vulnerability in Tom’s songs.

Released on 26 January 2024, the title track, written on Tom’s 32nd birthday and a favourite with fans worldwide, was nominated for ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ at the Ivor Novello Awards.

“Just a stunning day of beautiful live magic. We used very few close mics, but had a lot of ambient microphones placed around the room that captured something that we couldn’t explain. It was like the room warmed up just for that perfect take.

We couldn’t beat it. Alex’s gorgeous rhythm and Adrian bowing the guitar. Then the stunning vocals from Ellie, Nilufer and Dove. Anna and I just couldn’t stop smiling between the utter joy and raw emotion of the experience. Last summer, Chad Lawson and Esther Abrami came together in the studio to record ‘Sanctuary (Together)’.

Released in September, this beautiful piece features our 1917 Steinway & Sons Model D Concert Grand and is part of the ‘Where We Are (Together)’ EP.
