As you get closer to Daniel Freaker’s paintings, you will notice how varied his mark making is. There are a thousand tiny, delicious paintings held within one piece.

Travel through this collection of detail images and you will notice drips of fluid paint, quick wide brushstrokes and sprays of neon colour. You’ll see tiny splatter marks, delicate lines and sweeping gestural wipes.

Did you know ‘Portals’ was a name I considered for the gallery? I’ve always loved the idea that these painted surfaces we hang on the wall have the power to transport us to other lands.

Daniel Freaker’s artwork does just this. Inspired by architecture, botanicals and landscapes across the world, he creates new, imagined spaces to whisk us away to.

In this universe, everything is turned up in volume. Colour is saturated, neon or sherbet-like. Plants grow wildly and threaten to consume dwellings. Stairways cut a path through landscape towards unknown places. Water laps at forgotten shores.

‘Nova Ascent’ by Daniel Freaker is a remarkable, compelling painting. As I spend time looking at this new collection of works on the wall, my eyes return to it again and again.

Painted in a fresh, cool palette, Daniel adds touches of vibrant pink, orange, yellow and red to engage and excite us. The sun casts satisfying shadows on an imposing structure. The piece radiates warmth, despite expanses of soft, pale blue. Take a look 👉🏼 through the details to admire the intricacies of Dan’s mark-making - from the glassy, rainbow steps to cascading drips down the wall.

Luminous, dynamic and playful, this is a fitting painting to feature as we mourn the loss of art world great, David Hockney. Whilst the world may feel a little less bright today, his fearless use of bold colour is deep in the DNA of so many brilliant artists working today. What a great legacy. 🙌🏼❤️

EVERYONE was talking about this painting on Thursday night! ‘The Taste of Rain’ is one of the largest and brightest works in this show and was loosely inspired by the monsoon season in India.

Dan plays so skilfully with negative space here. He carefully builds the scene in layers, choosing key places to reveal the base colour and textures. Some areas have pencil marks and loose strokes of paint, slight and thin. Others have thick outlines and sherbet colour. The result is a beautiful cacophony - the wild botanicals vigorously obscuring our view of the architecture. It feels sensory - electric, hot, immersive.

Portals launches TOMORROW NIGHT!!!

It’s a VERY exciting week for Hackney as we head into the 2nd Hackney Art Week - where our borough explodes with creativity and passion.
