Interesting…🧐
Argh! 😱
Definitely not! 🏃‍♂️‍➡️

Believe it or not, these are all reactions to my work I love to hear! 😄

I want my work to make you feel something.

I don’t want admiration for how beautiful or life-like my work is.

I don’t want prizes for my outstanding contribution to an artistic movement. 🤷‍♀️

All I want to do is reflect the reality of the natural world and sometimes that reality can be unsettling or disturbing.

It’s not my job to prettify it or water it down. It’s my job to reflect things just as they are and if that provokes a visceral reaction, then I’ve done my job. 🎨

If I said you could wear the real inspiration behind my butterfly pendant, most people would turn pale… that’s kind of why I did it! 😅

Right from nursery school, we’re taught that butterflies are beautiful and we’re encouraged to draw them.

But we’re drawing drawings of drawings or drawings of photographs and that means that we can’t appreciate the intricacies of our inspiration. ✍️

We’re relying on other people’s perspectives and opinions without being able to independently form our own.

Creating this piece gave me the opportunity to do just that. To find my own perspective on the wing and quite literally set it to last forever.

Nothing in nature is exempt from Earth’s cycle of renewal and decay and I think this piece captures the fragility and fleetingness of something we all think we know, but we actually don’t. 🦋

OK, so my style admittedly couldn’t be further from classical art and to be honest, I don’t really find it that inspiring (cue sharp intake of breath! 🫢) But one area where we do seem to agree is the effect of light and shade.

Whilst I couldn’t give two hoots about whether the light and shade perfectly represented the shadow of a building, I really do think it can be used to convey emotion and capture a feeling. 🧑‍🎨

Nature is full of nuances of light and shade that highlight and disguise features simultaneously. If I look at something at dawn, it won’t look the same at dusk and I think that’s pretty special. ☀️🌖

For me, it’s about noticing those subtleties and reflecting that moment in time – something I hope you see in my pieces.

Everyone else: Trying to capture the ‘perfect’ midsummer selfie. 🤳🏻

Me: Under a tree pondering how I can replicate the texture of sun-scorched bark without causing a fire risk. 🔥

I love the build-up to summer solstice because it feels like the time of year where nature is the ultimate extrovert.

We get more texture. More species. More light.

It gives me longer to explore on lazy summer evenings and lets me capture more inspiration for my pieces. What could be better? 😌

Watching the seasons is like watching the best drama without those annoying paywalls and hidden subscriptions… 🍿

Every day, the seasons move along and when you really pay attention to the changes in shape, colour, and texture, you realise that the Earth is in a constant state of amazing flux. 🌍

Yes, we have spring, summer, autumn and winter but they’re just our own creation, our own boundaries we’ve created to help us understand the world.

No two springs, summers, autumns, or winters are ever the same and that’s why I’m constantly finding new natural inspiration for my art. 🎨

When I say I like organic things, I’m not talking about those premium organic carrots at Tesco! 🥕

I love searching for organic objects. Things like bones, skulls and teeth that are shaped by nature.

I love the fact that each one has a different texture, a different combination of colours, a different story to tell. 📘

But most of all, I love their rawness. They’re structures that exist just as nature intended them, instead of being contaminated by human hands.

That’s where true inspiration and exploration comes from in my book! ✨

Can something be cute but also be fierce? Heck yes!

We’ve got into a bit of a habit of going all heart-eyed when we see a cute and cuddly animal. 😍

But let’s face it (and sorry if I’m about to burst your bubble): most of these ‘cute’ animals are also pretty fierce and would do you some damage if you tried to cuddle them. 🫣

And that’s what I wanted to capture here.

Sure, otters can look cute but they’re also water-dwellers, predators and just part of the natural world.

That’s why I think capturing them as they are is far more exciting and interesting than creating yet another fluffy, doe-eyed otter! 🦦

I’m a bit of a magpie! 😅

I love shiny things that catch my eye in their natural habitat. From mushrooms to resins, there are plenty of shiny things. 🍄‍🟫

But the difference between a magpie and I (apart from the fact I don’t have feathers and wings 🤣) is that I also like to mix my shiny things with non-shiny things to reflect the essence of natural objects.

Take this necklace. Not everything is shiny and that’s where metal choice comes in. I like to experiment with different kinds of metals to act as a canvas for my art. 🖌️

For me, I like my metal to reflect the thing I’m creating, not have it polished and kept behind glass!

📢 Just a quick reminder that Bean Created by Me is available to exhibit at craft markets and fayres this summer in Central and South Wales and the surrounding areas.

I especially enjoy selling at fayres that celebrate the alternative and the spiritual. So, if you’re looking for a stallholder for your event:

Mainstream is like putting on your old pair of slippers. 🥿

Mainstream is nice and cosy.
Mainstream is comfortable.
Mainstream is predictable.

BUT… it’s boring! 🥱

Sorry not sorry for that statement but it’s true! 😅

Mainstream art feels like it’s trying a bit too hard to fit in with the ‘cool’ kids and forgetting to be itself. It feels conventional and like there’s already been plenty of pieces like it.

I want my art to be the opposite of mainstream.

I want it to feel new.
I want it to feel real.
I want it to feel different.

In short, I try to be my own person, and I want my art to reflect that part of me. 🎨
