⭐️ BARBARA ⭐️

A little late but we had a message from Barbara to add to the online exhibition!

“Always wanted to be able to paint Went to a couple of painting days courses in past. The art group has given me time and confidence to play around with the style that feels right for me. Jayne and Emily have been fantastic at showing me how to make things look right and how to manage the perspective. Still working on it ! Most of all they patiently chivied me to break through my self criticism and get the confidence to try. I haven’t yet painted anything I would want to display or hang on my wall but I have found that place where I am really excited when I can find time to go and paint something. I really do feel it’s a breakthrough and soon I may produce something I like but I’m now enjoying the journey. Thank you Jayne and Emily. Look forward to learning more next year”

Thank you so much Barbara for the lovely feedback and we are so glad you’ve enjoyed the group so far! 🎨

⭐️ ROGER ⭐️

Roger’s artistic background lies in the Llangollen Fringe where he was involved for ten years. In 2009, the Art Council, Wales, gave them a grant so six years in, Roger ran the Llangollen Fringe! Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and a number of contemporary artists got involved. This got him looking at art in a different way. He would see gardening as artistic, making things grow and the colours of the fruit and flowers. Roger is a small time publisher and a CD producer. Media and TV is another creative side of him.

Roger said: “I didn’t think I would be very good and I didn’t think I would stick it.” Roger finds it hard to do things if he feels he isn’t getting anywhere, but he has been extremely pleasantly surprised. He has found his niche in watercolours and has thoroughly enjoyed it.

He said: “I particularly like the weekly gap between sessions as it gives me time to practice and try new things. The watercolour sky is a good example of this. Having started it at home, I realised there was a movement to it that I hadn’t seen until I came to class. I started seeing things I hadn’t seen before.”

Roger is looking forward to continuing his art into the future and has thanked the group!

Well done Roger! You have learned and developed so much as an artist whilst attending the group! 🎨

⭐️ JEN ⭐️

Jen is one of five kids who were all told that they were good at something, and Jen was good at art. However, she left school with no qualifications. She did window dressing for a year but then learned she liked screen printing and being practical with her hands. She has done model making and making clothes at home, but never saw drawing and painting as one of her strengths.

Jen said: “I wanted to learn so I decided to come along to the group. I knew I had to start at the beginning and so I joined. Every time I come I learn something new. I love it. It’s meditative. I like acrylics, their bold colours and the impact they have. I still want to learn watercolours but I want to get to grips with acrylics first.”

Jen’s favourite piece so far is her small canvas of the unfinished dogs. She was experimenting with colours and now that she knows how to do this, she feels she can do it better next time. Jen has learned a lot about trees and how to paint them.

Jen aspires to be a good face painter which she believes goes hand in hand with painting and drawing.

Jen said: “Thank you so much. I wouldn’t have been on this journey without this group.”

Thank you Jen! Your work is coming on leaps and bounds! 🎨

⭐️ HOLLY ⭐️

Holly has just started her GCSE Art at school and attends the group with her mum, Wendy.

Holly said: “I’ve learned quite a bit. I’ve learned about shading, perspective and positioning, especially with portraiture. I’ve enjoyed learning new mediums, as I used to stick with just pencils. But I’ve been pushed to try new things. I want to carry on with clay modelling as I find it very therapeutic, especially making things from a drawing or painting. My mum loved the acrylic elephant painting and has it displayed at home.”

Holly thinks the griffin and the boy painting really shows how far she has progressed compared to the rainbow emotions painting. She had so much fun and got carried away with the string painting workshop that she completed 11 pieces! Holly said it opened up her creativity and she can see different things in each one. This challenged her to think of the shapes and what she could turn them into.

The group has helped with knowledge of composition that is needed for her GCSE work. It has also helped Holly to grow in confidence.

Holly said: “I can speak to people more comfortably, my skills are improving and I love seeing how my art evolves and changes”.

Well done Holly! We have really enjoyed seeing how you’ve grown as an artist! 🎨

⭐️ HILARY ⭐️

Hilary has been painting on and off for years using watercolours and pastels. She has not always found it easy to attend a class as not all of them go ahead due to small numbers. She likes the group as she finds it helpful.

Hilary said: “Jayne and Emily show me where I’ve gone wrong. I lose my confidence sometimes but attending the group has taught me to stick to things and know I can get better.”

Hilary has always liked watercolours and she is no longer afraid of acrylics!

Hilary particularly likes her second attempt at acrylics which is the blossom tree over the sea. She is pleased with Winston the bulldog too, painted in watercolours!

Hilary would like to work on wetting the paper before painting in the future! She is glad she has come back to painting and is looking forward to carrying on painting in the new year!

Well done Hilary! You have come such a long way since the start of the group! 🎨

⭐️ BEV ⭐️

Bev used to do art in school, 40 years ago! She describes herself as a complete beginner, only really drawing pictures for her nephews. She has learnt a lot and feels she can draw better than she could before.

Bev said: “I like the class because it’s peaceful to get on with things”.

Bev has surprised herself that watercolour paints are her favourite medium. She has enjoyed doing the birds mostly. Bev said: “I can start seeing in my work how I could do things better. I saw the elephant wasn’t right, so I did it again. That’s not something I would have done before.”

Bev’s favourite pieces are the lighthouse and the budgie. She is looking forward to carrying on drawing and painting!

Well done Bev! You have come such a long way! 🎨

⭐️ JAN ⭐️

Jan has a background in graphic design and window dressing, but she didn’t really do much traditional art. For a while, she designed cards for a friend’s business where she did small detailed illustrations with pen and watercolour.

Jan said: “I’ve got loads out of the group. I’ve got out of the tunnel vision and away from the tight, small illustrations. My aim was to be big and bold and free.”

Jan found soft pastels and she loved them. After discovering pastels, a family member confirmed that she had found her niche! She couldn’t get along with acrylics but really feels she should have another go. Jan likes where she is now and is happy with the work she is producing. She would like to conquer trees next!

Jan said: “I have loved the group. You have both been very helpful.”

Thanks Jan! We love your work! Well done on your progress! 🎨

⭐️ CATH ⭐️

Cath got a C grade in her O Level Art in the 80’s and hadn’t done anything artistic since! She didn’t realise she could do it! She said: “It’s been nice to learn. Perspective is something I’ve learned a lot about - to look at things properly”.

Cath has enjoyed working with acrylic paint but wants to try watercolours again soon to learn more. Although Cath likes parts of all her paintings, she felt the pastel drawing of the orange and the apple was a turning point for her. Cath’s suitcases painting was an exercise that she did not complete, but this was a great lesson in learning about perspective.

Cath is looking forward to continuing her artwork and learning and developing new skills. Cath said “I have really enjoyed the group with Jayne and Emily”.

Well done Cath! You have done brilliantly! 🎨
