Life Drawing at The Dory Gallery, Mondays 10.30 - 12.30

We are looking forward to a busy Autumn, sketching in the gallery. While we are skipping the half term to give everyone a chance to enjoy family time, there are plenty of other Mondays to pick up a charcoal stick and join us for our untutored drawing sessions with a live model.

Looking to develop your portraiture skills? Join Bernie Bakari for a series of 'Portrait Drawing from Life' sessions at Oriel Dory Gallery in Llangollen.

Working from a live model, these 3-hour tutored sessions offer a supportive and creative environment to build your confidence and observational skills.

Whether you are picking up a pencil for the first time in years or looking to build your confidence with life drawing, you are warmly invited to join Bernie Bakari for Portrait Drawing from Life at the Oriel DORY Gallery.

These friendly, relaxed morning sessions offer a supportive space to explore drawing human features from a live model, with plenty of guidance from talented local artist,Bernie.

Here at the Dory Gallery in Llangollen, we are pleased to announce the return of our popular life drawing classes from Monday 28 September 2026.

Running weekly from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm, these sessions offer a welcoming and supportive environment for artists of all abilities. Whether you are looking to refine your technique or explore drawing human form for the first time, these morning sessions provide dedicated time to practice with live models.

As we draw to near the close of our exhibition, Between Moss and Myth, we are delighted to be hosting one last event.

Local medical herbalist Zoe Blackwell, BSc Hons from Llangollen's Medicine Garden, delivers a talk where the ancient wisdom of plants reveal their truth through folklore, myth and medicine.

By growing, foraging, or brewing simple remedies, Zoe offers us a sense of personal control over our wellness.

Her informative talk is one for the seekers and green witches, for those who feels the deep, spiritual pull of plant medicine and for all who crave natural, accessible self-care.

Join Medical Herbalist, Zoë Blackwell, for a talk on the fascinating, soft green world of mosses, liverworts and hornworts, as part of the Dory Gallery's Between Moss and Myth exhibition.

Forming one of the oldest plant families on the planet and possessing no roots or vascular systems, bryophytes, have a unique system of survival. They thrive on all continents on Earth, and provide a home to a host of tiny beings.

Through the mists of human history, mosses have provided important support to the lives of people worldwide in many different ways. They feature in the practice of traditional Herbal Medicine with antiviral, wound healing, antimicrobial, and anti-cancer actions.

Research is showing that mosses can also offer us solutions to some of our most serious environmental issues by their ability to absorb carbon and remedy pollution.

The Dory Gallery is delighted to welcome Zoë from the Medicine Garden, Llangollen for a relaxed and informal talk with lots to discover on how these ancient plants have supported humanity from the beginning of time, and continue to do so.

Step into a world of Welsh wonder and enchantment with traditional storyteller Fiona Collins performing on the 12th September. at the Dory Gallery in Llangollen.

Set against the atmospheric woodland backdrop of the Between Moss & Myth exhibition, created by artists exploring the Dee Valley through ceramic sculpture, weaving, embroidery, textile art, painting and photography, this event brings our ancient tales, folklore, and mythic landscapes to life. We invite audiences to experience the magic of oral storytelling surrounded by art inspired by nature and myth.

Fiona is well known, loved and respected locally for her storytelling and her books. If you know her work, you'll want to come. If you don't yet, you're in for a rare treat.

We are delighted to host storyteller Andy Harrop at Oriel Dory for two special afternoon sessions as part of our "Between Moss & Myth" series.

With 30 years of storytelling experience, Andy has entertained audiences right across Great Britain, from Fort William to St Ives. He even delivered the highest story in Wales—at the top of Yr Wyddfa in the pouring rain. Drawing on Welsh myths and folk tales he first heard from his grandmother as a child, his sessions bring ancient lore to life for all ages.

Dates: Saturday 15th August & Saturday 19th September

Time: 1.00pm – 3.00pm

Before we even opened our doors for the Between Moss and Myth exhibition at Dory Gallery, one particular piece by artist seemed determined to cause trouble.

The artwork depicts a Pwca, a the notorious shape-shifting spirit of folklore.

Rowynn explains, “Strangely the artwork seems quite happy in my own home.
It was first exhibited at Oriel Môn, where its frame broke just before the show opening.
"It was later displayed at Aberconwy House where it frequently fell over, breaking the glass which had to be replaced.”

The irony, according to the old tales, is that a Pwca will remain perfectly peaceful if you simply pay it no attention. With that in mind, we have tucked Rowynn's Pwca away in the quietest, most secluded corner of the gallery for the duration of the show - which is open on weekends only. Without too much noise, the Pwca seems content.

You may or may not wish to view it. Just don't say we didn't warn you to show it some kindness.
