We know our Collen Players supporters love music hall and variety.

We were very sad to hear today of the passing of actress Sheila Burnette.

Sheila was a familiar and much-loved face on television for many years, with appearances in programmes such as Candid Camera, The Good Old Days, The Dick Emery Show, Coronation Street, Butterflies and more — always bringing warmth, character and wonderful comic timing.

She also had a strong and special connection with The Players’ Theatre, performing there on many occasions and helping to keep the true spirit of music hall and variety alive.

Tomorrow on BBC Four at 8pm, enjoy a repeat of a classic November 1976 edition of The Good Old Days, celebrating the golden age of music hall — and featuring members of the Players Theatre, London.

Presented by Leonard Sachs from the stage of the City Varieties Theatre, Leeds, this vintage programme includes performances by Ronnie Corbett, Kenneth McKeller, Rosemary Squires and The Looneys.

A huge thank you from The Collen Players!
Last week’s show was something truly special. It was a fundraising performance in support of the Church Roof Restoration Appeal, and we’re delighted to share that we made a fantastic profit of £1,228! 🙌

We want to thank everyone who made it possible: the performers, the box office team, those who ran the raffle, the catering and drinks helpers, the tidy-up crew, and anyone else who played a part in putting the show together. It was a real team effort, and we’re incredibly grateful for all the support.

Expect laughter, song, supper and silliness in equal measure — and every hearty cheer brings us one beam closer to keeping the roof above our heads!

The curtain rises once again… Music Hall & Variety Day is back for the 6th year - Friday 16th May 2025. This day presents an opportunity for theatre collections and collectors, performers, theatres and historians to unite and engage with the subject of music hall, variety and popular entertainment. This day was introduced in 2020 and marks the birthdate of Roy Hudd, who was the President of the BMHS for 28 years until his death in 2020. Su Pollard is the current President.
