The Autumn Gathering
Studio Cennen’s second exhibition at The Mansion, Aberglasney Gardens

28th October – 6th November
Open daily from 10am

Open Evening — Saturday 31st October, 5–8pm
With Coaltown Coffee serving delicious warming drinks, and free entry to the gardens.

We return for a second show at the mansion at Aberglasney at an auspicious time, at the twilight of the year when the harvest of the land, allotments and kitchen gardens have mostly been gathered in. The organic Walled Kitchen Garden here led by Hattie Kerrs has been ablaze with the rich colours of Autumn flowers and produce, with the Crab Apple arch dripping with colourful gourds and the rich burgundy w**e tones of Amaranth setting off the eye popping yellow of the Sunflowers. The sunny, warm days of this season contrast with the slight chill of the evenings.

And this is where we straddle the light and dark, the day and night - the Celts had two seasons - Beltain /Summer and Samhain / Winter - but this is the blurring time, the nuanced time of the evening before we dip into full darkness, the liminal space where later societies believed the veil between the real world and the spirit world was at its thinnest…when some cultures would lay an extra space at the table for their lost loved ones and others would light large fires to deter the evils spirits away.

Wendy and Tina are regular visitors to Art at the Hall and Studio Cennen so it was fab to see them at the exhibition. It was Tina’s first visit to Aberglasney Gardens but I have a feeling they will be back… as they spent most of the day with us… taking bunch and afternoon tea in the tearooms. X

Ralf and Paula Carpenter MBE

The conversation started with Ralf who was a press journalist, he recounted visiting Aberglasney when it was a forgotten garden with a haunted past.
Separately I chatted to Paula about her fab outfit and glasses. I discovered it was their 62nd wedding anniversary, and that Paula was award her MBE for services to children with disabilities. Their son is also being awarded and MBE for service to science… I wonder how often two generations in a family are awarded an MBE. Congratulations to you both… loved our conversation today. X

Rhian Nest James is a painter who loves her garden. While trees are her main focus, for this exhibition Aberglasney Gardens Rhian he’s turned her attention to the floral nature of her garden. Her painting ‘Shedio’ is situated at the end her garden path so that she can take delight and inspiration on her way to work. Rhian will be joining us this evening along with many of the Gardening Artists and Makers at The Mansion House 6-8pm with free entry to the gardens… That’s Aberglansey Gardens, Llangathen. I was delighted to make a visit out to Talog yesterday to visit master potter Mick Morgan. Summer months you will often find him on the garden tending his vegetables is the raised beds and poly tunnel.

This August, we are delighted to announce that Studio Cennen will be taking up residence in the Mansion House at Aberglasney Gardens.
It feels like a natural partnership. Many of the artists represented by Studio Cennen are also passionate gardeners, and so we have titled the exhibition The Gardening Artists. For some, gardening offers a welcome pause from the intensity of making – a chance to sow, nurture, harvest and reconnect with the rhythms of the seasons. Others grow flowers that become the subjects of their paintings, while for many, the garden itself provides endless inspiration and is central to their creative practice.

For this special exhibition, we are honoured to be joined by the godfather of Carmarthenshire potters, Mick Morgan. A local hero in the world of ceramics, Mick has taught generations of potters, ceramicists and sculptors through the Carmarthenshire School of Art. During the summer months, however, he is just as likely to be found tending his vegetable patch as working at the wheel, producing a glorious glut for the table – often served on platters crafted by his own fair hand.
We look forward to sharing The Gardening Artists with you this August at Aberglasney Gardens – a celebration of creativity, cultivation and the profound connections between making and growing.

The exhibition runs from Wednesday 5th August - Thursday 14th August entrance fee applies.
Join us for our open evening on Saturday 8th August 6-8pm, with free entrance to the gardens.
