Day 4 of my Brymbo landscape sketch studies.

This morning I added the sun and rays to these six quick sketches. Once the light source is placed, the landscape starts to gain volume — hills, trees and structures begin to emerge through light and shadow.

These are very fast studies exploring how the landscape changes depending on the time of day and atmospheric conditions. I’m building them up gradually, one small step each morning.

Part of my ongoing work developing landscape ideas for Stori Brymbo.

Continuing a small landscape exercise I began yesterday.

Each morning before work I spend a little time developing these studies, experimenting with where the light sits and how vertical forms interrupt it. Dividing the page into six small sketches allows me to move the light around the landscape and test different atmospheres before committing to larger paintings.

Afterwards I leave the work to dry and head off to the rest of the day’s jobs, returning the following morning to continue the exploration.

Fancy trying printmaking?

I’m running another printmaking workshop where you can learn the basics of the process and create your own original print.

It’s a relaxed session and beginners are very welcome — you don’t need any previous experience.

Printmaking is a fascinating process where drawing, ink and pressure come together to produce unique images.

All materials are provided and you’ll leave with your own handmade print.

This landscape holds an extraordinary story.

Stori Brymbo stands on a site where the history of the land stretches back more than 300 million years.

During the Carboniferous period this area was a vast tropical swamp forest. The fossilised remains of that ancient forest are preserved in the ground at Brymbo. It is an exceptionally rare discovery — one of only a handful of comparable fossil forests known anywhere in the world.

Over immense spans of time those forests became the coal and mineral resources that later powered industry.

In 1796, ironworks were established here, and for almost two centuries Brymbo produced iron and steel, shaping the lives of generations of local families and communities.

Today the site is entering a new chapter.

Stori Brymbo is transforming this historic industrial landscape into a place for heritage, culture and creativity.

Later this year I’ll be installing an exhibition in the gallery space here, so this post is a small introduction to the remarkable layers of history beneath the work.

From a 300-million-year-old forest…
to furnaces and steel…
to art.

Thank you to everyone who came along to yesterday’s printmaking workshop at the Workhouse. It was a lovely afternoon experimenting with plates, ink and paper, and seeing how each print develops its own character through the process.

One of the things I enjoy most about printmaking is that every stage offers surprises — sometimes even the so-called “mistakes” become the most interesting part of the image.

If you’ve ever been curious about how prints are made, or you’d simply like to spend a few hours learning something new and creative, I’ll be running more workshops soon. Keep an eye on this page for the next dates.
