WHAT'S THE FUTURE FOR THEATRE SCHOOLS?
I have to admit it's not looking that rosy right now. I've read so many articles, and so many of them say that in Britain we are likely to have to continue some form of social distancing for possibly 2 - 3 years! There has been talk of continuing restrictions on class and group sizes to a maximum of 15 for the long-term, which is great for sports team activities, but not good for theatre classes. Dance classes will largely be OK too, we don't go over 15 in a dance class anyway. But theatre classes are a different matter. KITE Academy couldn't run on 15 in a class unless we put our prices up a fair bit, which could make it unaffordable for many students. And which students would we get rid of? I just couldn't do that! And we're not going to get anything like the same kind of dispensation as schools, theatre classes in this country have been well and truly branded "a luxury" not a necessity! KITE, as many of you will know, is run as a non-profit organisation, all staff, including myself, are paid an hourly rate, and all excess funds or would-be profits are reinvested to create spaces and opportunities for disadvantaged children, many from very difficult backgrounds. If things go the way they look like they're going, all that could be lost. All those sponsored places gone! KITE Academy will return in one form or another, but I have a feeling it may never be the same again. Theatre schools in general could become an elite activity for those who can afford the new higher prices. I pray that I'm wrong!! Missing all my students so much!!
