Happy Burns Night to all who celebrate! I remember my dad's writing idol (he was a poet), was Robert Burns. He used to recite this poem in a pretty convincing Scottish accent!

This story is part of a series called The Oxford Reading Tree Green Sparks, which explains and illustrates the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in an age-appropriate way.

Happy Bookshop Day!

I worked in bookshops over a period of 5 years, and I have lovely memories of doing so. It was during this time that I realised how much I loved children's books, too, and I began to work towards my dream of being a children's illustrator🩷

Here are some photos of some of my memories of - pictured with the late Bill Douglas, who was a lovely soul and wonderful writer - and the adorable Bobby the dog, who became my painting assistant when I was painting on a Saturday!

I was also overly happy to be dressed up as a squirrel, when myself and Bob Stone were promoting our first book (the first book I ever illustrated), 'A Bushy Tale'.

Support your local bookshops! They are full of wonderful people - stories waiting to be told, and memories waiting to be made 🥰

It's Bookshop Day!
Why, I hear you ask, is there a Bookshop Day? Shouldn't every day be a Bookshop Day? Well I'd like to think so. Bookshops are the beating heart of any community. They are safe, inclusive spaces whose main purpose in life is to sell lovely things. They are places to relax and leave the world outside for a bit. At Write Blend we also stock cards made by local makers, we host author events and love to support local and independent authors. We have a free community notice board and don't even ask you to buy something in return (though it would be nice) and support as many charitable causes as we can. Bookshops, quite simply, are a force for good. That's why we have a day. So if you can, why not visit us today? If you're not local, visit your nearest independent bookshop. I promise you'll come out feeling better.
