Tate Liverpool is the home of the National Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art in the North of England, and is one of the largest galleries of modern and contemporary art in the UK, outside London. Who knew the sky could be painted using so many colours? 🖌️

Look closely at this painting by John Constable and you'll notice shades of blue, grey, and even hints of pink.

This painting is one of only a handful of oil sketches Constable made outdoors in winter. He wrote that he was impressed by ‘the magnificence of the sea’ and how seabirds, like those seen here, ‘add to the wildness and to the sentiment of melancholy’ at the shore.

We’re feeling inspired by Gillian Ayres’s vibrant painting Sundark Blues from the Tate collection. 🎨💙

Ayres referred to a work like Sundark Blues as a ‘bloody big painting’, and at almost 2.5m wide and over 2m tall, it certainly lives up to the description!

Painted at a time when Ayres embraced bold colour and heavily textured oil paint, Sundark Blues showcases her dynamic, expressive approach. Her artworks from this period often feature thick layers of paint, lively compositions and vibrant, swirling forms.

True to her practice, Ayres titled the work after it was completed, aiming to capture the feeling or atmosphere it conveys rather than offering a literal description.

Richter is regarded as one of the most important German artists in history. Since the early 1980s, the artist has frequently made abstract works by applying layers of paint, and then wiping a squeegee across the surface. As the upper layers of paint are dragged across the canvas, earlier moments from the painting’s creation are allowed to resurface.

Happy Birthday to photographer Don McCullin who was born on this day in 1935! From impactful war photographs to meditative landscapes, McCullin has built an extraordinary career capturing people and places that are impossible to forget.

We had the privilege of showing his powerful photographs in an exhibition back in 2021.

Emma Prempeh’s work explores memory, time and our relationship with home, including how places change over time.

Time even plays a part in the materials she works with. The slag metal she uses, which is an imitation gold leaf, oxidises over time, causing its appearance to tarnish and darken. This changing material reflects the idea that the places we remember also change over time.
