Fascinating filming “Diluting Le***an” this morning, a 30 minute performance for camera, which will be shown this Wednesday 17th June 2026
throughout, I thought a lot about my own journey with the definition of le***an and that my alignment with it now is stronger than it is has ever been.

Standing beneath a shower, a le***an performer repeatedly utters the word “le***an” as water falls continuously over her body. The performance engages with the word’s lingering status as something uncomfortable, loaded, and often left unsaid. Through repetition, the word begins to shift between declaration, endurance, and spell. Alone with the camera, the performer returns to the term repeatedly, testing its weight, its resilience, and its capacity to hold meaning. As the water attempts to wash everything away, the word persists. This intimate act of solitary repetition lays the groundwork for a subsequent live work in which the word enters into direct exchange with an audience, extending the investigation from private ritual to collective encounter..

‘artist practices are a form of witness, a testimony of survival, a promise of imaginative projection as well as the commitment to honest appraisal to stories that must be told’ (Maclaren, 1999, 107).

"Powerful" "phenomenal" "exhausting" "emotionally provocative" "funny" "heart breaking" "skilfully striking" () are just a few of the words audiences have used to describe RED FLAG, which was commissioned by as part of their 2026 festival.

Diluting Le***an
17th June 2026
Arts Centre

Diluting Le***an is a four-hour durational performance in a small shower cubicle, where the performer repeats the word “le***an” in a ritualized, mantra-like rhythm. Audience members are invited to speak the word, which is returned to them in their tone, exposing, reflecting, and amplifying how the word is socially held. The constant water threatens to wash the word away, yet it persists, resisting dilution and reclaiming its defining and clarifying power. The performance confronts the lingering stigma and taboo of “le***an,” transforming its supposed dirtiness into endurance, ritual, and relentless specificity. Over time, repetition, exhaustion, and relational exchange shape the texture and tone of the work, giving it a dynamic, evolving presence.

"Gander’s masterly command of the stage brings her natural inner and outer beauty to the fore. Charismatic and mesmerising throughout, her eyes literally transfix you, holding your attention, drawing you in, and then releasing you, sometimes slowly, sometimes not." -
