Movema & Unlock the Box are proud to present ‘Migration’: a collaborative dance film created by our community youth dancers & professional performers, filmed in several locations across Liverpool in December 2020.

This project saw youth dancers explore themes of migration, citizenship & belonging through , where they learned about four mythical birds from around the world, presented in the film by our talented Movema dancers: Pei Tong as the Fenghuang, known as the Phoenix, from Chinese culture; Sheetal Maru as the Peacock, from Indian culture; Ithalia Forel as the Sankofa Bird, from Ghanaian culture; and Hannah Ballard as the Liver Bird, representing British & Irish culture.

We’re in awe of the stunning work young people created on this project! Despite the many tough challenges presented by the lockdowns & restrictions of 2020 – with learning delivered through both face-to-face & virtual dance sessions - our dancers stayed committed to the project and delivered some stunning performances, working professionally & collaboratively with our filmmakers & professional dancers.

A huge thank you & well done to the young people and centre staff at Vibe Huyton - Knowsley Youth Mutual, St Cyril's Children & Youth Project - SCCYP, Hunts Cross Primary School & Unlock the Box Online, for all their hard work and commitment!

Big thanks to The Lantern Company for creating the magnificent costumes of our birds! More to come soon from these mythical characters in our new touring show, ‘Taking Flight’ 👀

Finally, a shout out to film maker Tim Brunsden and all our Movema staff & artists, who worked incredibly hard behind the scenes with our young people to deliver on our vision, helping to create an incredible project film for us to treasure and to celebrate all our hard work during the challenges of 2020: Emma Jane Lippitt Lauren Croxford Paul Doyle Steele Sabrina Lauren Tucker Maru & James Bowling.

Unlock the Box is funded by BBC Children in Need and has been running for 6 years, bringing high-quality, life-changing artistic experiences to Children and Young People around Merseyside with the least access to the arts!

After 8 weeks of sessions, where we explored the theme of and learned about different mythical birds from around the world, young people were able to film their final dance pieces in outdoor spaces across Liverpool, with opportunity to collaborate with our professional Movema performers!

"I've learnt how to create sections of a dance for people, so I developed leadership skills, and this will come in handy when I apply for a job" - Young people at Knowsley Youth Mutual gave some fantastic feedback from their experience on the latest round of Unlock the Box, where participants learned about & created their own , filmed on location in Liverpool (pre-lockdown 3.0)!

We're so proud of the young people on the project who stayed committed & engaged over the past 8 weeks of weekly sessions, despite the challengings times. Children brought so much creativity and positive energy to the project, as we worked together to develop dances based on birds from across the world!
