Magpie Theatre’s Variety Night is fast approaching!! Alongside a stellar line up of comedy, music, burlesque, sketches and more we are also previewing two brand NEW musicals! FOCUS and Treasure Story are two very different musicals with some fantastic new songs and memorable characters.

Focus:

Did you know that the first ever movie was filmed in Leeds? Louis le Prince was a Frenchman who moved to Leeds in 1866, there he set up a workshop and invented the first motion picture camera years before Thomas Edison or the Lumiere brothers. But the week before le Prince was supposed to publicly display his invention, he disappeared under mysterious circumstances and his incredible legacy was lost to time. ‘FOCUS: A Motion Picture Musical’ is a new musical, currently in production, that aims to tell the true story of the dawn of film and give Louis le Prince, and his wife Elizabeth, the credit they deserve.

We will be debuting three original songs from the show. ‘Gates of Paradise’, a song about Elizabeth breaking free of her shackles and stepping into the limelight. ‘Dear Brother’, a heartfelt song aboout grief and lost opportunities. And ‘Zoetrope at Night’, a sleepy but powerful duet about finding sanctuary in a chaotic world.

Treasure Story:

What happens when a master thief, a gambler and a general walk into a bar?

You get the first scene of Magpie Theatre’s brand new musical - ‘The Treasure Story’ - a pirate themed, sea shanty infused, coming of age show!! Performed at the Playhouse and Liverpool Fringe (where it was described by reviewers as ‘a metaphysical odyssey in miniature’) we’ll be showcasing the first scene along with two original songs, plenty of rum and plenty of sea shanties 🎶

David (otherwise known as and .tales ) will be performing some spoken word poetry at our Variety Night on 5th April Hope Street.

David is an internationally best selling poet and author followed by over 1 million readers around the world. He’s certainly looking forward to taking his poetry off the social media screen and onto the stage (he really can’t think of anything better, in fact).

We’re delighted to introduce Ron Bar-Ad - bringing a fantastic new writing piece called ‘Good Grief’ to our Variety Night on 5th April at The Arts Bar 🎭

Love is an intoxication. You breathe another’s air, you lose yourself in their mind, and hurt the next morning. It’s a vicious cycle, but success lies in circuity, and tomorrow’s yesterday is still today. If you could drink the contents of a soul, how much would you leave inside?

Good Grief is a play about sipping someone’s essence and going mmmmm. It’s a poem written for a bar 3 years ago, interwoven with a new companion just this year. Two lovers cry, they lick each others’ tears to numb their own, free to lose themselves in the tomorrow yesterday could have been.

Ron Bar-Ad, on the other hand, is not crying. He’s fine. This isn’t about his real life, and you shouldn’t feel bad for him unless you really want to. He’s a poet, playwright, improv comedian, social scientist, and frequent tooth brusher. And he’s okay. Promise.
