Metal Liverpool

Metal Liverpool Championing artists, creatives & other curious people to follow hunches, explore dreams & probe problems. Part of Metal Culture UK

Edge Hill StationšŸ“

Metal was founded in London in 2002 by Jude Kelly OBE, working with current Artistic Director and CEO, Colette Bailey since its inception. We have been active in Liverpool since 2004, in Southend-on-Sea since 2007 and in Peterborough since 2012. In each place, we work from buildings of historic significance that we have transformed from empty or derelict spaces into vibrant cultural community hub

s. From these bases, we work to provide the catalyst that can transform the potential of people and places through great art and inspiring ideas. Metal Liverpool supports artists from the UK and overseas, working in all disciplines, at all career levels, providing opportunities like the Liverpool Art Prize and the Chamber of Culture for emerging artists, alongside hosting artists-in-residence (Time & Space / International Programme) and running intensive, week-long Culture LABs for peer-to-peer learning and exchange. We create large-scale, participatory projects that respond to our immediate environment and strive to involve our local community. We curate exhibitions and events, which are often in response to place, such as 2016's open air concert Different Trains, or our monthly Film Station events. We also provide short term incubation space for artists studios and other creative industry organisations and community groups - contact us to find out more.

Are you an artist/creative with an interest in environmental practices? šŸŒ

We’re especially interested in connecting with anyone who may feel marginalised or underrepresented within current approaches to climate action in the cultural sector.

Why? šŸ¤”

We know that there is no climate justice without social justice. There are lots of different ways to engage with environmental issues through artistic practice, and we’d like to learn more about any iindividuals and organisations that are working across environmental sustainability and creativity, radical rest and nature restoration. We’re also developing new carbon reduction tools for the sector in partnership with the Design Museum and UP Projects, and we want to make sure your voices are heard and considered within any approach to reducing our carbon impacts as a sector.

If that sounds like you, comment or follow the link below to learn more and fill in our interest form.

This , we’re diving into ā€˜A Climate (In) Conversation’ - a recent (virtual) discussion between Jenny Porter, our Shift Organiser and Liverpool Site Director, and Pip Tuffin, Community Engagement Manager at SAIL šŸŒ

Shift Liverpool connects the cultural sector across the Liverpool City Region to drive sustainable change, while SAIL empowers the creative and cultural sector to take real, practical action towards environmental sustainability. Together, we’re asking: where are we at and what comes next?

From climate action to sustainability, funding, policy and the barriers stopping people from getting involved, we covered a lot. Plus, our hopes and fears for the future of this space, and ultimately the world around us.

We’re hiring šŸ“£ We’re looking for a proactive and highly organised Programmes & Operations Administrator to join our Liverpool team.

You will be central to the smooth running of Edge Hill Station and the first point of contact for artists, partners and visitors. The role combines office management, programme support, hospitality, and systems administration, and also plays an important part in delivering Metal Liverpool’s earned income strategy.

Our new Programmes & Operations Administrator will enjoy working with people, developing effective systems, and creating welcoming, well-run environments where artists and communities can thrive. This is a hands-on role within a small, collaborative team, requiring flexibility, initiative and care.

The role is full-time and you’ll be based on-site at Edge Hill Station. We’re running a guaranteed interview scheme for this role as part of our commitment to addressing the imbalance of underrepresented communities within the cultural sector and within our own organisation. You can also apply for this role in a way that meets your access requirements.

Introducing one of our Artist Ideas to Disrupt Loneliness events!

Artist Dora Colquhoun invites you to share the iconic Liverpool dish, Scouse, with friends old and new on Thursday 26 February and Thursday 19 March from 6pm šŸ²

Dora’s lived in Liverpool for 13 years but has never had a home-cooked bowl of Scouse made by a Scouser. Dora calls Liverpool home and wants to uncover the secrets behind what makes this stew so special.

Is it beef or lamb? Do you add turnips? Things could get controversial! But at the heart of Scouse is a big pot of nutritious, warming stew designed to bring people together.

Joined by experienced chef Alex M***i, you’re invited to come create a bowl of Scouse, connect with others and take home a receipt card so you can make Scouse (and a veg version) at home.

Want to come along? Sign up here: https://bit.ly/3McjkLE

This event is part of The Unlonely City programme which is funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation as part of the Arts Award.

You’re invited to share the iconic Liverpool dish with friends old and new, and enjoy a warm evening of socialising while learning a new skill.

We’re launching three new creative commissions to disrupt loneliness in unique and interesting ways in Liverpool.

Created by artists, each project features ideas that will bring moments of laughter and connection, in ways which are incidental and that might go on to be long-lasting. These three projects were chosen by a citizen-led panel of Liverpool residents, letting local people do the creative decision making.

In Liverpool, we’re working with artists Dora Colqhoun, Mark Brogan and Omima Hasbelrsoul Ahmed Mohamed in collaboration with Asylum Link and Tool/Toy Project. More on the projects disrupting loneliness near you:

šŸ’„ Dora will be hosting a series of ā€˜Making Scouse with a Scouser’ cooking sessions, a chance to learn how to make Scouse and share stories with friends old and new.

šŸ’„ Mark and Omima will be working with a group of people seeking asylum and refugees to create a large wall-painting / mural for the main recreation hall at Asylum Link Merseyside.

šŸ’„ Tool/Toy Project will be hosting a series of creative fibre-spinning parties designed to disrupt loneliness and foster connection among those living with chronic illness and pain.

šŸ‘‰ Keep a look out for opportunities to get involved with each project and learn more about each artist here: https://bit.ly/4bZ6aMq

Artist Ideas to Disrupt Loneliness is part of The Unlonely City, a programme taking place at Metal’s other sites as well. The Unlonely City is funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation as part of the Arts Award.

We want to take the opportunity to celebrate an amazing week we had earlier this summer, hosting our first Working Artist Week for aspiring artists looking to explore what making art means as a career.

Working Artist Week was a cross between an artist residency meets work experience, by pairing up an artist with a teacher, student, and their parent. The aim of the week was to delve into perceptions of arts careers, young people’s ownership of creative spaces, teacher confidence in supporting young global majority artists, and more.

Joining Working Artist Week in Liverpool we had student Lona receiving mentorship by artist and creative psychotherapist Claire Beerjeraz, along with their teacher Jade, and parent Mervat. Lead by Claire, we made the city Lona’s campus, visiting film studios, theatres, exhibition galleries and museums, giving her a feel for what’s possible in creating and showing your work, and how skills in the painting can be used in things like stage design, costume and makeup, and sculpture.

After all the inspiration provided by Claire and Jade, Lona created new pieces of work exhibited at Edge Hill Station, reflecting her week and presented to her family and art teachers. It was the first time Lona painted large scale work, and experimented with more abstract ways of expression to make a bold and colourful painting based on Liverpool’s skyline. To round off the week, Lona and Mervat headed to the Everyman to see a performance of The Snow Dragons by the Young Everyman Playhouse

A huge thank you to Claire Beerjeraz for expertly guiding the week, and introducing First Take, Everyman Theatre, Open Eye Gallery and Victoria Gallery & Museum to Lona, Jade and Mervat.

Working Artist Weeks is supported by Freelands Foundation.
