Another year and another unforgettable BBC Proms for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra 🎶

Last night was particularly special as we were joined by composer Carmel Smickersgill, who won our Rushworth Composition Prize in 2018 and, seven years on, was here for the world premiere of her new work, A Brick Thrown with Love.

A wonderful reminder of what can happen when we invest in and champion new musical voices. ❤️

There was another Proms first to celebrate, too, as violinist Simone Lamsma made her Proms debut with a fantastic performance of Britten’s Violin Concerto.

The programme also brought together Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No. 9 and Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, in a performance led by our Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze.

A very special night for the orchestra — and a celebration of extraordinary music, past and present.

What’s with the scaffolding? Major works are underway to remove and refurbish the windows of the Grand Foyer Bar and 1840 Lounge.

The original steel window frames, now almost 90 years old, are showing serious signs of deterioration. To preserve this important feature of our Grade II* listed building, we’re carefully restoring them and future-proofing the frames, so that they remain part of the Phil for years to come.

Due to the building’s heritage listing, we’ve worked closely with Liverpool City Council’s Heritage Officer from the start to make sure that we balance the preservation of the Phil’s historic character with the need to protect and improve the windows for the future. At the same time, we’re reducing our energy usage and carbon emissions by enhancing the single glazing with more thermally efficient vacuum glazing.

Our Head of Facilities, Alan, has been hard at work with his team to oversee a project that’ll “strike the right balance between conservation and modern performance.” By the end of October, we’ll have beautifully renewed windows that’ll continue the Phil’s history and are fit for the future too.

Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity, something both Stravinsky and our brilliant Youth Company musicians wholeheartedly embrace. Our Youth Orchestra and Youth Academy Orchestra musicians will be performing his Firebird Suite in the new season in the concert Into the Sun - another favourite from Master of the King’s Music, Errollyn Wallen CBE.

Every week, our Youth Programmes reach more than 2,300 children and young people across Liverpool.

From In Harmony Liverpool Philharmonic to Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company, we’re creating opportunities for young people to make music, build confidence and shape their futures.

And now, we’re looking for three brilliant people to join the team and help us do even more.

⭐️ In Harmony Liverpool Philharmonic Operations Manager

You’ll help keep things running smoothly across our Youth Programmes, providing project management, administration, operational support and pastoral management.

⭐️ Youth Company Operations Manager

You’ll lead on the administrative and operational processes that support our Youth Programmes, helping us deliver meaningful experiences and maximise the positive impact for participants, communities and audiences.
