Liverpool Biennial presents the largest festival of contemporary visual art in the UK. It takes place every two years across the city in public spaces, unused buildings, galleries, museums and online. The Biennial is underpinned by a programme of research, education, residencies and commissions. Founded in 1998, Liverpool Biennial has commissioned over 300 new artworks and presented work by over 450 artists from around the world.

It's the final weekend to visit 'Think of Us' at the Royal Albert Dock!🌟

‘Think of Us’, part of the Inside Out Project, where portraits of participating children line the walls of Royal Albert Dock, accompanied by a soundscape available online

'Think of Us' explores the ways in which school-children from across the Merseyside, would like to feel seen and heard, how they feel young people are perceived and listened to, and how they might use public art to communicate with adults.

"We are the people of the future waiting to be heard."⁠

We had Composer and Sound Recordist Sara Wolff work with the schoolchildren during the 'Think of Us' workshops, to create soundscapes to accompany their portraits.⁠
⁠
The accompanying soundscape features discussions and recorded messages that reveal the depth of understanding that many children have about the issues facing the world around them, which they feel that adults underestimate.⁠
⁠
The children prepared a statement of up to 30 seconds, as their response to ‘Think of Us’. It was supposed to be something that mattered to them and something that they wanted people to hear. The children were very interested in the equipment and how it worked, and soundscapes were discussed as being a different form of art.⁠

‘Think of Us’💭

Today, we launch a new major project ‘Think of Us’, where portraits of participating children line the walls of Royal Albert Dock, accompanied by a soundscape available online🌟

During a series of workshops, children explored the ways in which they would like to feel seen and heard, how they feel young people are perceived and listened to, and how they might use public art to communicate with adults.

Children discussed their sense of self and identity and the importance of being able to access public spaces, free from judgement, that are well looked after and safe. They also shared their belief that adults do not always understand children. Through the portraits on display, they express who they are as individuals and challenge misconceptions about children.

The accompanying soundscape features discussions and recorded messages that reveal the depth of understanding that many children have about the issues facing the world around them, which they feel that adults underestimate.

Think of Us, a direct quote from one of the participating children, was collectively recognised as a starting point for how they could use art to change the world. In the words of another child, “don’t just think of us, remember us”.

We're looking for a Learning & Programme Assistant who will provide in-person support for audiences and artists including facilitation support for learning activity, in addition to working behind the scenes in administrative areas such as booking travel, drafting schedules, and purchasing and organising materials.⁠

We're looking for an Access Liaison Officer who will lead on the accessibility of the festival, ensuring appropriate provision is available across exhibitions and events, that access information is communicated clearly and consistently, and that opportunities for creative and embedded approaches to access are encouraged and delivered.⁠

The Children’s ‘Think of Us’ Manifesto🖍️⁠

During our schools workshops for the 'Think of Us' project, the kids involved created posters, where they explored how they would like to feel seen and heard, how they feel young people are perceived and listened to, and how they might use public art to communicate with adults.⁠
⁠
Their responses have made up part of a Children's Manifesto, read below👇️⁠
⁠
⭐️Respect our interests⁠
⁠
⭐️Think from our perspective. We also go through hardships⁠
⁠
⭐️Understand that we can grow out of things⁠
⁠
⭐️Think of nature and how it needs you to shine for it to be alive⁠
⁠
⭐️Think before shouting. It makes us cry and sad⁠
⁠
⭐️We want to not be treated like toddlers and not to be treated like adults, we are our own self – let us be us⁠
⁠
⭐️Grown-ups need to play more and be silly⁠
⁠
⭐️Believe in our future and our dreams⁠
⁠
⭐️Build more of what we love. We want more parks, fields, and more places for disabled children⁠
⁠
⭐️We can make a difference too⁠
⁠
We really want to hear more from children about what they want to communicate with the world. 🌍️ We've created a space for conversations with children to expand. “Just because we are young, it doesn’t mean we think small”🧠⁠

In preparation for the ‘Think of Us’ unveiling, our Curator of Learning, Katie, and artist facilitator Klaire Doyle have run 21 workshops to 400 year 6 school children across 9 schools in Merseyside!

In the planning of the project, we visited Holton Lodge School as a starting point, to discuss the 3 key themes of, ‘Portraits and Identity’, ‘Reclaiming Public Spaces’ and ‘Art and Social Change’, with the children to hear their thoughts.

There was lots of interesting discussions with the children, some of the key themes that emerged as important to them were:
⭐️Care for spaces and each other
⭐️Wanting more say in designing outdoor spaces (making them more playful)
⭐️Feelings of judgement from adults in public spaces

The title 'Think of Us' came from, which came from a direct quote from one of the schoolchildren at Holton Lodge School, he went on to say, “don’t just think of us, remember us”. He was very surprised and excited to hear that this inspired the title of this project!

Following our initial workshops with the schools that introduced the project, we later brought photographer, Emma Case, to take the portraits, where the children were encouraged to consider how they express themselves, whether that was through their favourite things, what they wear or what poses and expressions they make.⁠
⁠
The schoolchildren were asked to create posters as a way to communicate what 'Think of Us' means to them, what they want to say to grown-ups, and how they want grown-ups to think of them. Composer and Sound Recordist, Sara Wolf, then worked with the children to turn these thoughts into voice recordings, which will become 5 separate soundscapes that will become available to listen to on our website.

‘Think of Us’ is a direct call to action as part of Inside Out Project, where we’ll see all the children’s ideas come to life through the display of their portraits, as well as hear more about their thoughts, at the Royal Albert Dock, launching soon!📅⁠
