On this date in 1639 the Liverpool born astronomer Jeremiah Horrocks became the first person to accurately predict and observe a transit of the planet Venus. He made his observation from the village of Much Hoole in Lancashire. Jeremiah has been referred to as the "Father of British Astronomy". The 30 km diameter lunar crater Horrocks, located within the north eastern rim of the much larger Hipparchus, is named in his honour. This image of the crater was taken by NASA's Lunar Orbiter 4 spacecraft.

A short online talk about the Liverpool born astronomer Jeremiah Horrocks who is regarded as the Father of British Astronomy. His detailed astronomical observations and accurate predictions of the positions of the Moon stars and planets made a huge contribution to the science of astronomy. The talk details his main astronomical achievements and includes a photographic tour of significant locations in Liverpool and Much Hoole which are associated with his life and work. A campaign aims to raise funds for a statue of a Toxteth man who was one of the founders of modern astronomy.

BBC News report on the campaign launched to erect a statue in honour of 17th Century astronomer Jeremiah Horrocks.
Historians and Hollywood screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce are among those who want to commemorate the Liverpool-born scientist.
"Horrocks is a bridge between astronomers like Gallileo, Copernicus and Newton," said Gerard Gilligan, chair of the Society for the History of Astronomy, which is working with Liverpool Astronomical Society on the bid.

The statue could be placed in Liverpool's St John's Gardens or Preston in Lancashire.

The launch event of the Jeremiah Horrocks statue campaign held yesterday at Liverpool Central Library was a huge success. There were great talks by a number of passionate speakers including Dr Allan Chapman.

Thank you so much to everyone who attended our launch event yesterday. We had a wonderful time thanks to our speakers who were truly excellent. Thank you to Liverpool Central Library for allowing us to use the beautiful Hornby Room for the event.
