Long before Liverpool became synonymous with Merseybeat, one of the city’s first internationally celebrated jazz artists was already making waves around the world.
Born in Liverpool in 1887 to a Jamaican father and Irish mother, William Masters—better known by his stage name Gordon Stretton—rose from the streets of the city to perform across London, Paris, New York and Buenos Aires, helping spread the sound of jazz to audiences far beyond Britain.
