Dreading a disciplinary conversation you know is coming?

You’re not alone. For many business owners, the hardest part is knowing how to handle it properly — and worrying about getting the process wrong.

That’s a fair concern. A poorly handled disciplinary process can lead to a costly employment tribunal claim.

The ACAS Code of Practice sets out the key principles for handling disciplinary matters fairly. And if an employer unreasonably fails to follow the Code, a tribunal can increase an award by up to 25%.

The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated.

When you know the right steps to take, you can approach the conversation calmly, fairly and confidently.

Save this post as a handy reference for the next time you need to have a difficult conversation. 👇

And if you’re not sure what to do, get advice before you act. It’s usually much easier to get the process right from the start than try to fix it afterwards.

Did you know The Pensions Regulator can issue fines of up to £10,000 a day for serious breaches of your automatic enrolment duties? 😬

And auto-enrolment isn't just about putting employees into a pension scheme and ticking a box.

There are ongoing responsibilities to keep on top of, including:

💷 Paying the right contributions

Make sure you're contributing the correct amount and paying it on time.

🔄 Re-enrolling eligible staff

Every three years, you'll need to assess your staff and re-enrol eligible employees who aren't already in a qualifying scheme.

📝 Keeping proper records

You need to keep the right records and be able to demonstrate that you're meeting your duties.

📅 Completing your ongoing duties on time

There are key dates and responsibilities throughout the year — not just when someone joins your business.

Pension Awareness Day on 15 September is a good reminder to check that your pension processes are actually doing what you think they are.

Because finding a pension compliance issue yourself is much better than waiting for The Pensions Regulator to find it for you. 👀

Not sure what you should be doing or when?

We can talk you through your responsibilities and help you get things back on track.

Your employees’ use of AI at work could be creating more risk for your business than you realise.

What happens if someone uploads sensitive client information into ChatGPT?

What if an AI tool gives them incorrect information and they pass it on to a customer?

And what happens if an employee uses their personal AI account for work and then leaves the business?

These aren’t reasons to ban AI altogether. But they are reasons to make sure your employees understand how AI should — and shouldn’t — be used at work.

A clear AI policy can help set expectations around things like confidential information, data protection, checking AI-generated content and using personal accounts for work.

We’ve put together a quick checklist to help you assess where your current gaps might be. 👇

How many can you tick off?

If your score leaves you with more questions than answers, get in touch. We can help you make sure your AI use is practical, responsible and covered from an HR perspective.

Getting someone's pay wrong is one of the quickest ways to lose their trust.

And while one payroll mistake doesn't automatically mean a constructive dismissal claim, repeated or serious failures to pay employees correctly can create a much bigger employment law problem.

With National Payroll Week running from 7–11 September, it's a good time to take a look at what's happening behind the scenes.

Because if your payroll process relies on:

🧠 Someone remembering what needs to be done
📊 Manual spreadsheets
📧 Information being passed around by email
👀 One person "just knowing" how it all works

…you could be leaving your business open to unnecessary mistakes.

A good payroll process should have clear responsibilities, proper checks and a reliable way of recording changes to pay, hours, holidays and other employee information.

Small payroll errors can quickly become big employee relations problems.

So, when was the last time you properly checked your payroll process?

If the answer is "I can't remember" — that's probably your sign. 👀

We can help you audit your payroll processes and make sure the basics are properly locked down.

⚽ Here We Go, Here We Go, Here We Go ⚽

The World Cup has officially kicked off, the opening ceremony is done, Mexico got off to the perfect start and somewhere in the UK an employee is already wondering if they can leave early for the next big game... or come in late because the fixture schedule isn't particularly kind to us English folk! 😄

Which means employers across the country are preparing themselves for:

🤒 The mysterious 24-hour bug
📅 The sudden influx of annual leave requests
📱 Employees who definitely aren't checking the score under the desk

Let's be honest, if England (other nationalities are available too 😉) are playing in a knockout match, half your workforce will either be watching it, talking about it or thinking about it.

Pretending otherwise rarely works.

Instead:

✔ Encourage people to book leave early
✔ Consider a bit of flexibility where you can
✔ Plan around key fixtures
✔ Have some fun with a sweepstake or competition
✔ Remember not everyone loves football (apparently)

A little flexibility now can save a lot of headaches later.

And if you're wondering whether:

"Sorry I'm late, there was an accident on the road..."
..is still going to work when half the office saw your celebratory Instagram post at 1am...

Probably not. 😏
