Next week I’m creating an installation here, in the Tribune at Strawberry Hill House and Gardens on the outskirts of London as part of their 2026 flower festival. Over thirty florists/designers/artists will also be creating their own piece of magic throughout this incredible Horace Walpole house.

Fresh flowers aren’t permitted in the Tribune so I’m using dried materials throughout (not just flowers 😉). The arid, fire-scorched landscapes which have been so present this summer provided the initial inspiration, whilst I also set about incorporating the concept of an ‘edge’ - the brief from this years guest curators flowersonthe.edge who have teamed up with the OG curators Flowers at the House 😎

If you’ve never been to Strawberry Hill House & Garden honestly you really should - the house alone is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, then add in a whole triumph (? correct collective noun 🤷🏻‍♀️) of florists and artists doing their fabulous thing around the house and you’ll have an utter spectacle. There’s an onsite cafe, a couple of after-dark events, the option of picnics and a marquee for talks, presentations and demonstrations, which will take place throughout the four day festival - all talks are included in the entry ticket.

It runs Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th - do visit if you can, I highly recommend it. It’s seven years since I was involved in the inaugural festival and I know it’s grown hugely since then - I can’t wait to be back.

I’m demoing at 1pm Thursday 10th and am likely to be around all day, and maybe sporadically on other days too, it would be great to see you there 🥰 Now, let’s see if what’s gurgling around in my head can actually translate into reality 🙏😳🤞

Glimpses, light & shadows.
The design in the last post became an interesting subject to experiment with shapes, composition and chiaroscuro details.

So - lighter or darker 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just something I threw together from the crispy garden. Well, I say crispy, it’s actually not too bad given that nothing gets watered apart from pots and a couple of plants that looked on the verge of expiration. One of which is a small patch of Veronicastrum (not pictured) I have a lot round the garden and it’s all thriving - except a small patch at the very edge of the garden where it gets all the wind and uninterrupted sun. I imagine it’s like those penguins in the Antarctic that shuffle round so nobody is always at the edge - except my poor Veronicastrum can’t do that 😆

Eclipse moment with the phone - the eerie feeling and the light is actually more memorable than the reality of an eclipse without the glasses 😂. I tried a plate for the reflection (in 1999 I got a great view on a car bonnet) but the plate didn’t really work and I don’t have a metal colander.
Flo was not impressed with this evening’s walk 🥴🫣😂

I love nothing more than picking the flowers, creating something unique with them, then photographing the result. A representation of Lowther’s rose garden incorporating flowers from mine - that poppy hasn’t spread itself around sadly (yet) 😔

Lowther Castle & Gardens

Seeing them made into merch was rather thrilling 😆

1st August. Marking the new month with a simple bunch of Daucus carota ‘Dara’, picked from very contented, self seeded plants - growing through cobbles and taller than me. And although it feels wrong saying happy anything while the world shrivels and burns - Happy Yorkshire Day.

This week four artists visited to paint the garden and this is a little snapshot of their day here. What talent 🙌 And how lovely to see the different interpretations of the same place. Thank you all so much for coming.
(I’m not sure everyone is on IG - I’ve tagged who I can find - if you know the others please let me know and I’ll tag )

While the garden explodes with pretty, pink floofiness I allowed myself a moment with my beloved browns, touchy textures and wonky shapes. I might just have to start a campaign for positive ways to describe browns - instead of the usual ‘sh*t’ or ‘nappy’, let’s actively use attractive words - conker, hazel, chestnut, chocolate, coffee, umber, walnut, sepia, tawny, russet, fawn, tan, ecru, cappuccino - the list is endless so let’s be kind to brown 🙏🤎

In case you needed to hear this as much as I did yesterday. After a crazy couple of weeks between London then straight on up to Scotland I grabbed a quick moment for a paddle at this stunning beach before a long hot drive back home again - thanks for the recommendation and Fee looks like we had the same idea 😂. Wait til the end for a little surprise 🫶

On Thursday this happened - just a little soupçon before running off for the next thing 😳. A collaboration between myself and of Ochre Botanical Studios for The Florists’ Table by flowersonthe.edge

Based on a crack in the ground - we made paper in advance from cleavers, waste paper and mulberry bark. Some pulp was poured directly onto the ground to dry which gave the paper authentic earth marks and red ochre earth pigment was used to dye paper pulp for terracotta hues.

Flowers and plants were picked and pulled from cracks from our respective gardens and transported from Edinburgh (on a train 🤭🥴) and Yorkshire, with little treasures and gems collected en route from White Goose Flower Farm - including bits of bricks of course 🤷🏻‍♀️

What a spectacular event by and for florists, artists and designers - or whatever we choose to call ourselves. And what a blast to meet faces I’ve only ever know online, while catching up with long time friends. An amazing, creative event where the busiest of people took a moment to commune with nature, interpret British flowers however they saw fit and convey their own authentic message through flowers (and paper 😂)

Huge thank you to Cissy Cissy - Wildstems and Liv Wetherly. for making it happen.

I promise more another time 🏃🏻‍♀️🤪
