3 Bags Full - Wrap Liskeard in Wool

3 Bags Full - Wrap Liskeard in Wool We're a group of people based in Liskeard who love to work and play with wool. We run fun, friendly woolly events. [email protected]

3 Bags Full started with a wool market, workshops and a wonderful but very wet wool wrapping dance around town in April 2013. Since 2014 then we have held events every autumn.

Liskerrett is an amazing centre which hosts so many wonderful groups and activities. Liskeard knit and natter meets there and we have held many woolly workshops there. Do help if you can.

LISKEARD UNLOCKED 2026

Can you help bring historic crafts to life?

Every year Liskeard Unlocked brings hundreds of locals and visitors into the town centre to enjoy walks, talks, events and to see behind doors which are normally closed.

This year the national theme for Heritage Open Days is Everyday Histories - exploring everyday working life through the ages. We want to celebrate the crafts which were such an important part of working lives in Liskeard in times gone by.

We are looking for craftspeople who can demonstrate how the crafts would have been done. We are offering free spaces in one of the buildings open for Liskeard Unlocked (outdoor spaces also available). Craftspeople will be able to sell their work.

The main day for Liskeard Unlocked will be Saturday 12 September. Depending on the response from craftspeople we are also considering organising a craft fair, which may be on a different day during Heritage Open Days (11-20 September).

We are also interested in craftspeople who can offer drop-in activities or workshops featuring traditional crafts, and we would pay for this.

Below is a list of crafts we are particularly interested in, based on ones we know were practiced in the 19th century. We are also open to other suggestions if they are crafts which would have been part of everyday working lives.

• Basket making
• Bookbinding
• Carpentry
• Candle making
• Cutlery grinding
• Gansey knitting
• Gilding
• Hat-making
• Lace making
• Leather working - boot and shoe-making, glove making, saddle making, thong making (cutting strips)

If you'd be interested in taking part pop your details in an email and send to [email protected] and we'll get back to you.

After the giant community effort to make the poppy cascade and get it in place it’s also been wonderful to have so much appreciation and to know that it really contributed to helping everyone remember the fallen.

There’s one final chapter to this story because we will be keeping the cascade to use again next year and of course it’s sopping wet after all the recent rain. The Royal British Legion branch put out a call for someone with the space and facilities to clean the mud from the bottom and dry it. Immediately, a number of people very generously came forward. This included Liskeard Community Fire Station and today when we took it down they rolled it up and took it away to clean and dry. Firefighters to the rescue!

We took it down not a moment too soon as the Christmas tree arrived minutes afterwards.

Liskerrett Community Centre, where the cascade was put together, have kindly agreed to store it so we can make good use of all the work which went into it by reusing it.

Thanks again to Liskeard Town Council for enabling the use of the Fountain, including taking the cascade down today.

We were very honoured to be asked by Liskeard Royal British Legion to contribute a woolly poppy cascade to the displays for Remembrance this year. We’ve also put up some poppies outside Liskeard Library.

It has been an amazing community effort, with a large number of organisations helping to make it happen, along with lots and lots of individual knitters and crocheters, some of whom made over 100 poppies each.

Huge thanks to The Sewing Shop -Liskeard, Cornwall, Bumblebee Knitting, Liskerrett Community Centre, Liskeard Town Council, 1st Liskeard Scout Group, Liskeard knit and natter, Liskeard U3A, and of course Liskeard Royal British Legion.

We are very close to being able to put up the poppy cascade for Remembrance. Today we had a trial to make sure it fits (it does!) and work out the details of how it will be attached. It will go up at the end of the month.

We’ve been really blown away by the huge number of people who have helped make it possible. Both The Sewing Shop -Liskeard, Cornwall and Bumblebee Knitting have encouraged their customers to make poppies and have collected them for us. Lots and lots of individual knitters and crocheters have made poppies, some making more than 100 each!

We now have enough poppies, with even some left over, which we’ll keep safely until next year when we have more plans.

As well as contributing poppies, members of Liskeard Knit and Natter have also tied them on to the netting, along with members of Liskeard Royal British Legion, and the Stitch Up! and Slow Stitch groups and Craft Tea at Liskerrett Community Centre

Liskeard Town Council lent us their ladders today, along with staff to ensure they were used safely.

And Liskeard in Bloom have taken down some of their floral display on the Fountain to make way for the poppies. We really appreciate their cooperation.

We’re delighted to say that we raised £450 at our Yarn Swap, which we’ll be donating to Liskeard and Looe Foodbank and Liskerrett Community Centre. This was thanks to the generous donations in exchange for yarn and stuff, the raffle, and contributions from Saltash Scrapstore, and Cornish Days who ran the pop-up coffee shop.

Thank you again to everyone who took part and our team of volunteers, including from Liskeard Cricket Club, who moved furniture, set up the space and ran the event.

Many thanks to everyone who came to our yarn swap today. It was great to see you all and you brought and took away masses of yarn and other woolly stuff. We’re also very grateful to Boost for providing the venue, to Cornish Days for their absolutely delicious food and drink and to Saltash Scrapstore for running a stall and contributing to our good causes. They also took all the yarn and stuff left over so it’s great to know it’s gone to a good home. Jackie, Vicki and Trudi ran really lovely make and take sessions too.

Huge thanks as well to the volunteers, including from Liskeard Cricket Club, who carried our hired tables and chairs from the Public Hall to Boost House and back again.

We’ll do another post when we’ve totted up how much we raised.
