I hope everyone had a good first day of term.

Just a wee reminder for anyone who is missing art club, I am now running after school art sessions at Maisie Gray, with pick up from St Joseph's. The Monday sessions are fully booked this term but if we get enough people on the waiting list, we will run a second session. Full details on the website...

The Art Room @ Maisie Gray with Victoria Ross. The Art Room is a weekly, term time art class for creative young people. Classes are led by local artist Victoria Ross. Each term we will explore a different theme through a range of art activities and projects, introducing new materials and techniques....

Just popping on to say hello... and goodbye.

As Ruby moves on from StJoseph's, it's time for me to move on too, so I'll no longer be running the art club.
I am running after school art sessions though, this time from Maisie Gray Pottery Studios and am able to walk pupils from St Joseph's along to the sessions. If you are interested, here is the link for more information and to sign up:

P1-P3 Week 4 - Picasso Owls

We were also taking inspiration from Picasso but this time from his sketch of an owl.
Working in oil pastels, I talked the kids through drawing out the owl step by step and then we added Picasso style patterns. After that it was time to add colour and everyone was encouraged to make their owl as bold and vibrant as possible.

Week 4 P4-P7 - Picasso Cockerels

Today’s inspiration came from Picasso’s painting ‘le coq’. We had a look at the painting and talked about cubism and how Picasso might have gone about making this piece. Then we all had a go at sketching out a cockerel before we moved onto our final picture. We were working in oil pastel to draw the cockerel, then switched to soft pastels to add all the vibrant colours before using oil pastels again to make the patterns. Lots of beautiful, colourful birds!

This was our last session for this term so I hope everyone has a good Christmas when it comes and I look forward to seeing all my little artists again in the new year.

Week 3 P1 - P3 Tissue paper self portraits

We also tackled self portraits today but instead of using paint or pen we used tissue paper to create colour. Firstly, I talked them through drawing the face in sharpie then we used a wet paint brush to dampen the picture before putting the tissue paper on and adding a little more water. Finally, the tissue was removed. The kids were fascinated by how the dye from the tissue would then be transferred onto their portrait.

Week 3 P4 - P7
Tim Burton inspired self portraits

All the usual challenges of a portrait - facial proportions, shading, highlights etc but with the added extra of working in the style of Tim Burton’s animation. We talked first about proportion and also how the finished piece would differ from a regular portrait. Then we had a practice run before beginning our portraits. Finally, we talked about where the light and dark would fall on the face and how to represent that. Not everyone got completely finished but they produced some lovely quirky portraits.

P1-P3 Week 2 Flanders Field Poppies

The younger children also had a Remembrance Day project using potatoes to print a field of poppies. We talked about why poppies are used to remember the soldiers who fought in WW1 and we also discussed perspective and how the further away something is, the smaller it will be on the page and so we would have larger poppies at the bottom of the page and smaller ones towards the horizon.

P4-P7 Week 2 Armistice Day Peg Soldiers

This was an interesting opportunity for us to think about what it might have been like to be a soldier in one of the world wars. We talked a bit about what Armistice Day is for and about different regiments and battalions, what their uniforms were like and what they had to carry with them every day. Then we drew a sketch before creating the peg soldiers. There were lots of imaginative uses of the materials and I think the battalion we created looks fantastic.

P1-P3 Week 1
Day of the Dead Skulls

Another chance to see how much everyone has grown since I last saw them. Lots of new faces too and we were focusing today on making drawings of sugar skulls much like the older children. We worked through drawing the outline and the features together and then the children were free to decorate the skulls how they wanted. Everyone chose some coloured paper to draw flowers on and these were cut out along with the finished skulls and added to a black background. Lots of beautiful, colourful work!

P4-P7 Week 1 - Day of the Dead Skulls

It was lovely to see lots of familiar faces ( and a few new ones) at our first session today and wow, they have certainly grown a lot since we last made art together!

Today we used symmetry to draw decorated skulls in honour of the Mexican Day of the Dead festival which happens November 1st and 2nd. We talked about the meaning and importance of the festival to those who celebrate it and then set about drawing our skulls. Those who didn’t quite finish will be able to do so next week before we move onto our next project.

We are back! Can't wait to get started next week on some exciting art projects with St Joseph's budding artists.
