Lincoln Choral Society

Lincoln Choral Society We are a 100 strong mixed choir: We have been combining friendship, pleasure and musical excellence since 1896.

Lincoln Choral Society is a mixed choir of 90 plus members. Most of our concerts are given in the magnificent setting of Lincoln Cathedral. We present two major concerts a year, usually in March/April and in November, and smaller ones at Christmas and in the summer. The Society, formed in 1896, aims to be a happy Choral Society, where friendship and a mutual love of choral music binds us together

into a successful organisation where musical excellence is the ultimate goal. We aim to give our audience high quality and enjoyable choral music which extends their repertoire and ours, offering diversity of experience to choir and audience and enriching the cultural life of the community.

One of our favourite memories from our Neustadt trip in June… 🎶🇩🇪

On our final evening, after a wonderful night of w**e tasting, we ended up doing what choirs do best: singing together.

Thankfully, we don’t have too long to wait until we’re all singing together again…

This October, our friends from Neustadt will be making the return journey to Lincoln, where we’ll join forces once more for a very special concert in Lincoln Cathedral on Saturday 3rd October.

We’ll be performing Mozart’s Requiem and Spatzenmesse together, and we’d love to fill the Cathedral to welcome them to Lincoln.

This October, a very special musical friendship comes home to Lincoln. 🇬🇧🤝🇩🇪

Just a few weeks ago, a group of our choir travelled to Neustadt, Lincoln’s twin town in Germany, where we were welcomed with incredible warmth by our friends in the Philharmonischer Chor Liedertafel Neustadt Weinstraße e. V.. Together, we shared music, hospitality and memories we’ll treasure for years to come.

Now it’s our turn to welcome them to Lincoln.

On Saturday 3rd October, we’ll be performing Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C Major (Spatzenmesse) together in the magnificent surroundings of Lincoln Cathedral. It promises to be a very special evening, celebrating not only one of Mozart’s greatest masterpieces, but also the long-standing friendship between our two choirs and our two cities.

If you’ve been following our journey to Neustadt, we’d love you to be part of the next chapter.

Lincoln Choral Society was so saddened to hear of the death of Dr Jonathan Griffith. Several of us had the privilege of singing under him, with the opportunity to sing in Carnegie Hall the highlight of many of our singing lives. With our sympathies to his family and to all at DCINY.

Here are some tributes from our members.

Sad news to hear that Jonathan Griffith has passed away. He was a gifted musician, vocal teacher and conductor. He was extremely passionate and demanded perfection from his choir. Singing the Armed Man in Carnegie Hall, New York in the presence of Sir Karl Jenkins in 2016 was certainly a memorable experience for me as a member of Lincoln Choral Society.

For me it was the highlight of all my choral experiences. What a night that was …. Unforgettable and due mainly to Himself who was strict but didn’t he make us sound well and all together? RIP

He brought out the best in us and the best from Karl Jenkins. In New York, rehearsals were the highlight of the day, although challenging. Better even than seeing a Broadway show..

Our Lincoln Choral Society UK first encountered Jonathan in January 2016, after the DCINY invitation to perform Karl Jenkins' Mass for Peace, "The Armed Man" to be performed at Carnegie Hall- what a thrill! It was soon evident that on the podium, Jonathan was in command; no need for ferocity or a raised voice, this conductor radiated knowledge and with almost clinical clarity diagnosed the gaps in our knowledge and helped us to improve technique and sound. It was not easy practising, but gratifying and rewarding. With such a range of abilities in the massed singers, we could hear improvements as they came. There was no divo. Jonathan joined our tours when he could and discreetly became part of the group, never imposing himself. What a man! What a perfect role model. On other tours we attended, it was always the way. With sadness and gratitude.

Jonathan was demanding, but only, as he always said, because he knew we could do better. I learned so much and rehearsals were an absolute masterclass – not just in the rehearsal but preparing beforehand to sing. We got some strange looks vocalising in the elevator before the rehearsal… And Jonathan’s insistence on “silent breaths” still rings in my ears. He made me a better singer. Thank you, Jonathan.

We’re back home from Neustadt and reflecting on what a magical final day we had there yesterday 🇩🇪

We spent the day exploring local history at Villa Ludwigshöhe, riding the chair lift up to Rietburg Castle, and enjoying some traditional local food there.

And our trip couldn’t have ended in a lovelier way, with a cellar tour and w**e tasting at Weingut Peter Stolleis, where we were treated to a beautiful evening in the gardens overlooking the vineyard.

Alongside several delicious w**es, we enjoyed quiche and Rote Zora for dessert, before ending the evening in the best way we know how: by singing songs together from around the world 🌍🎶

A wonderful final day to round off a truly special trip, full of music, friendship and memories we’ll treasure for a long time.

A huge thank you to our friends in Neustadt for making our trip so special❤️

And just like that, we’re on our way home. 🇩🇪❤️🇬🇧

After a wonderful few days in Neustadt, we want to say the biggest thank you to everyone who made this trip so special.

To our friends in the Liedertafel Choir, thank you for welcoming us so warmly, singing with us so beautifully, and sharing such a memorable concert with us.

To our hosts, thank you for opening your homes to us and looking after us with such incredible kindness and generosity. We really couldn’t have been made to feel more welcome. You have treated us so wonderfully throughout our stay, and we are so grateful for everything you have done.

Thank you to everyone who organised, planned, cooked, hosted, guided, poured w**e, shared stories, sang with us, laughed with us and made the whole visit run so smoothly.

The friendship between our choirs is something very special, and this trip has been a wonderful reminder of just how much joy, generosity and shared history it holds.

We leave Neustadt with full hearts, happy memories, and a great deal of gratitude.

Until we meet again…in October! 🥳

Last night’s concert in Neustadt was such a special one for us. 🎶🇩🇪

Singing Mozart’s Requiem and Spatzenmesse with the Liedertafel Choir felt like a beautiful expression of the friendship between our two choirs, and of the many visits, concerts and shared memories that have been part of that friendship over the years.

Over the last few days, we’ve been so warmly welcomed by our hosts, and it’s been wonderful to spend time together both in and out of rehearsal.

Mother Nature also treated us to a crack of thunder just before the Requiem began, adding a little extra drama to the evening…

We still have one more precious day here with our hosts in Neustadt before we head home tomorrow, and we’re looking forward to making the most of it. ❤️

Concert warm-up is underway at St Pius, Neustadt… 🎶🇩🇪

The church is VERY warm, so our voices are warming up nicely, and we’re getting ready to perform Mozart’s Requiem and Spatzenmesse with our friends from the Liedertafel Choir in just a couple of hours.

Not long to go now!

What a special evening we had last night. ❤️🇩🇪

Our friends in the Liedertafel Choir hosted a beautiful dinner for us in their wonderful choir hall, where we enjoyed a delicious three-course meal and such a warm welcome.

It was a real pleasure to hear from Frank Sobirey, Chairman of the Liedertafel Choir, who shared the story and history of the friendship between our two choirs.

The walls of the hall were full of posters and photographs from concerts here in Germany, as well as memories from past visits and exchanges. Among them, we spotted two very familiar sights from home: Lincoln Cathedral and the Stonebow!

Seeing those pieces of Lincoln here in Neustadt was a lovely reminder of the connection between our choirs, and of the friendships that have grown through music over the years. 🎶

Bring on tonight’s concert! 🥳

A little glimpse of this afternoon’s rehearsal at St Pius Kirche, Neustadt… 🎶🇩🇪

It was fantastic to spend the afternoon rehearsing with our friends from the Liedertafel Choir in the very church where tomorrow’s concert will take place.

We can’t wait to perform Mozart’s Requiem and Spatzenmesse there tomorrow!
