Hello I’m Joy. My full name is Joyce Compton but people call me Joy. I think people started calling me Joy as a bit of a joke, my mother said that she’d never heard of a child that cried so much as I did. Not that I’m a particularly sad person, I’m very happy. I have a good career and very good friends. Hattie and Grace are very good to me…they can be quite tedious and naïve but I love them. I do not say that often so I hope they appreciate that. I am a journalist…an aspiring journalist, I work for the local newspaper as a typist but I want to be a journalist, I want to write about important news. News that people care about, none of this ‘who won first prize for some fancy cake’ rubbish I want to write about real stories, stories people need to hear about. An article I sent into the newspaper, under a pseudonym of course (women are not allowed to write for the paper) and it got published! My hope for the future is that women have more opportunities, my mother had a job during the war and when all the men are back she went straight back to being a housewife. It’s just not fair. One of my fondest memories is with her, when she was working on the farms she took me with her and would run around the fields and I would watch her laughing and chatting with all the other land girls. I knew she loved what she was doing, it was hard work but she enjoyed it. She was happy. Then dad came home and everything just went back to normal, as normal as normal gets. Grace is married now and Hattie is engaged. It’s like they have all forgotten what it was like. They keep trying to set me up on dates it is very annoying, although it did make me smile today when Grace suggested an old flame of Hattie’s, you should have seen her face…she was so angry. I don’t think I have ever seen her look so red, not since that time she picked up the wrong blusher once for the pageant.

Hello there, my name is Harriet Taylor, though you can call me Hattie. I am twenty years young and currently live in Lincolnshire with my parents. I am pleased to announce that I shall be moving out soon though in order to move in with my new husband William! He isn't my husband yet, as a matter of fact he only proposed a couple of months ago, but of course I said yes. We met while he was organiser for the local beauty pageant where I won my second successive Miss Lincolnshire title. I hope to continue this winning streak at least for the next two years.
Being a Beauty Queen I am very conscious of maintaining my beauty regime. In between pageants I spend time with my wonderful neighbours Joy and Grace. One of my fondest memories is going to our first dance together when we were sixteen, we had all bought new dresses and it was one of the only times I have seen Joy properly dressed up. She can look very pretty when she wants to.
Though she did make me smile today when she was teasing Grace about her obsessive cleaning routine, they bicker like a couple of old ladies sometimes!

Character Profile:
Hello, my name is Grace Johnson and I am twenty years old. I have a wonderful and loving husband called Ronnie. He is always so sweet and kind, that is what I love most about him. He always cheers me up. He really made me smile today when we were talking about how we met at the beach, when he was eighteen and I sixteen, I was grumpy, he was charming! Well he still is, he has never changed. He is so passionate about everything he does! Especially his campaign within his political party – the conservatives.
When I am at home I like to cook, clean, look after my husband, knit and sew. My fondest memory is from when I was a young girl. I remember it as if it was yesterday, my mother was teaching me and my younger sister Ruby how to bake lemon drizzle. I think I was around twelve and Ruby around five. Ruby was so excited to show off her cooking skills to mother. But when she opened the oven she found that she had burnt hers as she had left it in a little too long. She was so upset, and I know that we argued a lot and I should have enjoyed the fact that mine was perfect and hers not, but, I just felt so sorry for her. That was why I swapped hers for mine. From that day our sisterly connection grew its foundations, that is why it is my fondest memory.
My favourite pastime is to sit around afternoon tea with my two best friends Hattie and Joy. We like to go out dancing on Friday nights with our partners. Well my husband and Hattie’s fiancé. Joy doesn’t have anyone despite our setups, she’s just always stuck into her work. I do worry for her, she must try and settle down soon. We are going out dancing again in a couple of weeks and we are going to try and set Joy up again, hopefully this time she will see sense.
In the near future I hope to start a family with my husband. I can’t wait to have children to attend to. We don’t mind what we have, we just long to start our happy family.

Character Profile:
Hello there! I am Jenny Johnson, known to most as a aerobics fanatic and happy-go-lucky Jen. I am currently 20 years of age, trying to make a go of a full time career out of my fitness classes or surrounding sports exercise. I live with my loving but seemingly strict Dad in the middle of Lincoln. Since losing my mum at a young age, I see my best friends Brandy and Shell as my true family. Brandy is definitely the tough one (she doesn't take any nonsense from anyone), Shell is like the chilled out little sister and as for myself... I guess I'm the missing piece of the puzzle - I tie us all together in one crazy bubble! Seeing Brandy and Shell join in with my keep-fit routine made me ridiculously happy today. It made me smile, knowing full and well that exercise is really not their 'style', but they do it to support me and I appreciate them for that. I wish my Dad took more interest like them! I hope that future me, Brandy and Shell will all still be as close, continuing to make happy memories together. Memories like I have with my mum. The days when I used to help her bake cakes (and eat the mixture) and when I would try on her pearls from her favourite jewellery box.. Those are what I cherish most.

Character Profile:
Hey my name is Shell, well Michelle but I’d rather you call me Shell. I work at the record shop around the corner. I live with my mum and dad (but I can’t wait to move out). My mum works in the chippy and my dad is the maintenance man at my old school. I am 19 but my birthday is next month and I really want some new docs (I’ve saved up half the money). My best friends are Jenny and Brandy who are an odd pair but I wouldn’t change them for the world (but don’t tell them I said that). We met at school, I pursued Brandy because I thought she was cool and then Jenny joined. What makes me smile most is probably those two and music…and the pub. I really love music and I want to be in Brandy’s band but I don’t think she’ll let (because I can’t play guitar for s**t). The best time I’ve ever had though, was a family holiday to Spain. Spanish men are my absolute weakness and doesn’t Brandy know it, she’s always taking the p**s putting on an accent just to annoy me. Well jokes on her because it’s not the accent I like, it’s the all over tan and thick, dark hair. Anyway, what was I saying oh yeah hopes for the future…hopes for the future? God knows I just want to have fun really…
