"There is an element of cycling which, while not anti-social, returns you to yourself." - Gavin Turk

This week Lincolnshire had the pleasure of hosting Britain's biggest professional men's cycle race for the first time. Good luck to the riders of Lloyds Tour of Britain Men during their Final Stage through Scotland today.

Why don't you ride on over to the Usher Gallery to check out two bikes from ‘Le Bikes De Bois Rond’ by artist Gavin Turk on display in our gift shop (not for sale I'm afraid!). In 2010, the bikes were used in a series of rides exploring the potential of turning bikes, and the act of cycling itself, into art.

Le Bikes De Bois Rond are on display from 10am to 4pm, Thursday to Monday, here at the Usher Gallery.

Not many are familiar with this small scale painting, created by none other than James Ward Usher!

James Ward Usher (1845-1921). Continental Lake Scene. Watercolour, 1866.

Usher, although most known for the gallery or his jewellery, also enjoyed painting. This watercolour was part of his original bequest to the Usher Gallery in 1921. 🖼

Yesterday marked the year of 40 years since Henry Moore’s passing. We want to celebrate his life by spotlighting one of his works in our collection, a lithograph, included in our recent rehang.

Although Moore is most well-known for his sculpting work, he often drew and created prints. His work bordered on Surrealism, with a clear inspiration having been taken from the movement, despite not identifying as a Surrealist.

This Lithographic print "Sculptural Objects" was produced in 1949, as part of the ‘School Prints’ series. This series was realised by Brenda Rawnsley, and aimed to supply original, high-quality contemporary art to schools for children in this post WW2 era.

The lithograph was obtained for the Usher Gallery through an MLA/V&A Purchase Grant, with Lincolnshire County Council and the Usher Gallery Trust and Friends of Lincoln Museum and Art Gallery, in 2009.

Make the most of this long weekend, at the Usher Gallery!

Over the bank holiday, our opening hours remain the same, from 10am to 4pm, Thursdays to Monday.

Come and see the newly acquired Papestry, or admire our sculptures up close outside in the grounds.

As well as these, our temporary exhibition Lincoln Camera Club: Work and Play in Lincolnshire 2025 is on upstairs. This special photographic assignment was carried out throughout 2025 to celebrate 100 years of Lincoln Camera Club and is on display until Sunday 1 November 2026.

Happy Birthday to George Stubbs!

On this day, we want to share with you this painting by Stubbs, where he demonstrated his mastery at rendering the animal form. (And with National Dog Day just tomorrow, its perfect timing!) This painting was commissioned by Charles Anderson-Pelham, 1st Baron Yarborough of Brocklesby Park in Lincolnshire.

George Stubbs, (1724 – 1806). A Lemon and White Water Spaniel. Oil on oak panels, 1784

Stubbs is renowned for being one of the greatest English horse painters, with his work recently staring in the National Gallery exhibition Stubbs: Portrait of a Horse earlier this year, but he also painted other animals such as dogs, deer, lions and a kangaroo.

After a look around our exquisite gallery, take a walk through our Clore learning room. This is a place for artists of all ages to unleash their creativity, whether it be drawing, collage, or making something new!

We love to see the range of art that our visitors create, and if you can bear to part with your masterpiece please add it to our display!

On your right as you enter our most recently rehung gallery, is a small but surprisingly detailed painting.

Valentine Thomas Garland, (1840-1914). An Anxious Mother. Oil, 1891.

The scene shows six white and brown puppies on a brick and straw floor, with their mother looking down at them anxiously from atop a wooden crate.

Measuring only 33.2 cm tall and 25.6 cm wide, An Anxious Mother was one of the few paintings that James Ward Usher originally bequeathed to the Usher Gallery. Garland typically painted with oil paint, and primarily painted dogs, but also dabbled in watercolours. He exhibited 24 works at the Royal Academy from 1868.
