Happy Birthday to the incomparable Russell Mael! 🎂⚡️

For over five decades, the voice of Sparks has defied genre boundaries, gravity, and conventional pop wisdom. Alongside his brother Ron, Russell hasn’t just witnessed musical history - he’s constantly reshaped it.

From 70s glam and pioneering electronic disco with Giorgio Moroder to theatrical art-pop, Sparks laid the groundwork for modern alternative music. Today, their DNA runs through indie rock, post-punk, and synth-pop, championed by generations of peers including Franz Ferdinand, Beck, New Order, and modern luminaries like Jack Antonoff and Florence Welch.

Few artists maintain such relentless vitality, sharp wit, and vocal range this deep into their career. Russell proves every night on stage that true creative reinvention never goes out of style.

Raise a glass to this incredible front man. Happy Birthday, Russell! 🥂🎶

Expect great tunes, a bit of chat, and possibly some stories behind why these tracks made the cut (and why a few didn’t 👀).

Sounds good SANTÙ!

23/09/2026

It's Wednesday, it's nearly 10am, and you know what that means... time to tune into The Alt Shift for an hour of alternative tracks to beat that mid-morning slump! 🎧

One of the things I love most about alternative music is what a vast soundscape it is. There's SO much to choose from! And it's got me feeling nostalgic for the good ole mixtape. Remember making one for a friend or a crush? Or even better, being given one?! Such a brilliant way to discover new tunes and find out what the people you love are into. 📼💛

So in the spirit of the mixtape, today's show is a special playlist from friend of The Alt Shift (and friend of mine) KIKI! She's a proper world traveller who's lived everywhere from Seattle (an alternative music gem!) to Melbourne, where she's living now. 🌏

We're being treated to songs handpicked by the lovely Kiki, and she's put together a delicious mix. Tune in and enjoy!

It's me Jessica, in the studio today, so come keep me company! 🎙️
