In capable hands a guitar can sing a mesmerizing song.

This is Anthony Toner Music opening with his arrangement of Shenandoah. Fifteen albums. A lifetime of craft. And chops that make a guitarist jealous.

He's coming to Chalk House Sessions on Thursday 21st May. Come and hear what a room full of people listening in complete silence sounds like.

She lent me a guitar cable in a green room in Tunbridge Wells and I've been a fan ever since.

Jennifer Lee Ridley has a quality that's almost impossible to describe and completely impossible to ignore - a lightness, a kindness, a gentleness that comes through before she even plays a note. And then she plays a note.

Whimsical, romantic, deeply poetic - her music draws from Sandy Denny, Joni Mitchell, and the great English lyrical tradition. Shakespeare. Keats. The dark warm vocals. The individual folk sound.

Bill Barclay, Music Director at the Globe, called her music "phenomenal" and said he found himself "rather inspired." I know the feeling.

If Joni Mitchell had grown up in the English countryside, she'd be writing Jennifer Lee Ridley songs.
Come and hear for yourself.

Lewes - Thursday 21st of May - two of the finest songwriters you might not have heard of. Yet!

I'm Erika — I run Chalk House Sessions, a candlelit listening room at the Lewes Con Club. No jumbotron. No pyrotechnics. Just extraordinary artists, a seated room, and something real happening between the stage and the audience.

Next month I'm bringing you Belfast troubadour Anthony Toner Music — think James Taylor and John Prine in a glass of Redbreast — alongside the luminous Tunbridge Wells based Jennifer Lee Ridley.

Cinematic tales. Jewel tones for your heart. Music to set your soul aglow.

You have no idea how small the world is until music starts connecting the dots.

I met Anthony Toner Music over coffee in Belfast - we'd never crossed paths before but shared a dear friend, and within an hour it felt like we'd known each other for years.

That's what his music does too. It pulls you in like you already belong there.

15 albums. A devoted following across Ireland and Scotland. Special guest to folk legend Barbara Dickson. And the kind of fingerstyle guitar playing that makes a guitarist jealous.

One audience member at The Green Note in Camden called it "like watching a series of beautiful short films." I couldn't say it better myself.

What if James Taylor and John Prine came together in a glass of Redbreast? That's Anthony Toner.

Thursday May 21st. Lewes Con Club. £15 / £8 concession.

The world is exhausting right now.

Genuinely.

Here's what I suggest: next Thursday, Lewes Con Club, cheapest pint in Lewes, and a few hours of music that will actually make you feel human.

Mary Bragg is flying in from Nashville. That's her playing a new song with John Paul White at the legendary Bluebird Café.

She's that good and she's coming here.

I'll (Erika Olson) open the night. She'll headline. And it's going to be exactly what we all need.

Two weeks tonight, Mary Bragg comes to Chalk House Sessions.

A writer of rare grit, heart, and precision, if songwriting were the long bow - Mary would be its deadly master. Her arrows fly straight and true.

We’re properly thrilled to welcome her to Lewes for an intimate night at the Con Club.

If you like your live music up close, human, and actually worth leaving the house for — this is one.

Last night was something special.

So many of the audience members knew both Hannah and James and were so excited to see them together.

James Hodder Music , the consummate gentleman, regaled us with masterfully written songs, earthy, textured vocals, and joyfully delivered guitar work. Hannah Scott took the stage in the second half and, despite her petite stature, commanded every ounce of our attention — filling the room with poignant stories and soaring melodies that seemed to defy gravity.

But some of the most spine-tingling, gooseflesh-inducing moments of the night came when the artists joined one another in harmony. The blend was so tight, so natural, it felt as though they’d been singing together for years. There was real magic in that collaboration.

It was one of those nights that reminded me, yet again, of the magic of community and the power of coming together. Whether as artists or audience, when we gather in a room like that, we create something greater than the sum of our individual parts.

And we’re just getting started.

Next up: Mary Bragg , with support from yours truly. Then in May, we welcome Anthony Toner Music and Jennifer Lee Ridley - Poetry, Prose and Music.

A few weeks ago, my daughter went to her first big show at the O2.

She was completely taken in by the feeling of it - everyone singing together, dancing together, caught up in the same songs. People who didn’t know each other. People who may have nothing in common outside that room.

And again, it struck me how powerful music is in a world that can feel so fractured and aggressive.

Yes, we do these nights because we love music.
Yes, because artists deserve rooms where people really listen.
But also because music connects us - to our neighbours, to strangers, even to people we may not fully understand.

We can disagree on plenty. But when that song hits, it hits hard.

That’s why we do Chalk House Sessions.

Tomorrow night, Hannah Scott and James Hodder Music join us at the Lewes Con Club. I’d love to see you there.
