Review by Sonya Smith: Crone Alone
Liz Aggiss
The Dance Space, Brighton Festival

‘‘Is it worth it?’’ she asks. Liz Aggiss, dubbed ‘the grande dame of anarchic dance’ says she has been called many things. This show proves that one of those things has to be ‘genius’. A term bandied around with abandon, but in this case, it’s something you as an audience member can feel. In fact, I was close to shouting it out to her, mid-performance. Which, I believe, she would have welcomed. This is performance art in it’s most delicious form, basted in almost five decades of experience and exploration, skewered by piercing talent. My companions and I certainly gobbled it up and let it drip down our grinning chins, fully sated.

Liz Aggiss is exquisitely controlled in her wild movement. Her body, her face and her eyes hook the audience. She understands costume and how it is character, deserving close attention in its treatment. Every move related to it is deliberate, enthralling. She knows how to balance the whole space and everyone in it, having us teeter, laugh, hold our breath, squirm, celebrate, all the while being expertly and warmly held throughout.

Her script, which of course she wrote, because this show is all her own and herself on a silver platter, is clever and witty but also inviting; an exploration of performer/audience relationship that involves the audience without forcing any kind of butt-clenching ‘participation’. We listened closely. What is value? What is worth? What does it mean to be a woman? Keep asking questions, Elizabeth, because yes, it is worth it.

Get the full film programme

As we approach the 10th Eastbourne International Film Festival, a question that has shaped the festival from the beginning feels even more present:

What if a film festival wasn’t just an event, but a way of building independence?

What if a coastal town could become a global cinema stage – even just for 10 days, weeks or more? A stage created from local stories to international screens, from a small town to a global audience.

For a decade, Crossing The Screen has explored what happens when culture is shaped not from the top down, but from within a community.

Built by volunteers, young people, and local audiences, the festival creates space for independent cinema to live and grow – while opening up real educational pathways, including its Talent Accelerator programme and digital accreditation opportunities for emerging creatives.

In a coastal town where opportunities can be harder to access, the festival has become a creative tool for regeneration—connecting local talent with international voices, and turning participation into possibility.

Because independence in the arts is never created alone.

It is built – collectively.

Celebrate a decade of cinema and discover screenings, workshops, and seminars across Cavendish Hotel, Eastbourne & Hailsham Pavilion Cinema from 2–9 May.

St Leonards-based artist Jack Milroy opens a new exhibition ‘Bibliophilia’
London, on 15 April

For Bibliophilia, Jack has selected illustrated books – depicting flowers, animals and costumes – transforming them into intricate 3D book-works. The exhibition also includes pieces made from his now famous sardine piccanti tins, recalling an early series for which the artist famously ate sardines every day for lunch for 100 days!

📚 “Upstairs at Shapero Rare Books, you will be able to see the display of first editions and beautifully illustrated folio editions, carefully presented in pristine condition. These books can be read but they are also meant for collecting and display. Downstairs in the Shapero Modern Gallery, my exhibition shows books that have been vandalised, disembowelled and dismembered volumes, presented in crisp acrylic showcases. These books are not meant to be read but are for collecting and reflecting – perhaps on the demise of the book as a purveyor of information and knowledge.” Jack Milroy 📚

Over a career spanning 6 decades, his work has been acquired by major institutions including the V&A, Imperial War Museum, the British Library, Great Ormond Street hospital, the UK Government Art Collection, the Kit Kemp Collection and the Caldic Collection in the Netherlands. His work is also held in significant private and corporate collections in the UK and internationally, including BA, De Beers, Fidelity, Seagrams, Bank of America, Nat West, Firmdale Hotels, University of Wisconsin, Queen Mary University, London, and others.
