The Foot of the Walk - and in colour - Sept 1963

A wonderful colour view giving you a peep down the original Kirkgate at the bottom of Leith Walk in 1963. The big arrow that directed people to the Gaiety Theatre was once pinned just above the Smith and Bowman sign. The Foot of the Walk was one of the most popular meeting places for Leithers just under Queen Victoria statue, outside Woolworth Store. Here's a claim to fame for Leith - Leith had a Woolies over a year before the one was opened on Princes Street. Leith store opened in January 1925. Despite a couple of moves of just a few feet (1968 and 2002) Queen Vic has stood unamused at the Foot of Walk since 1907 when 20,000 people attended her unveiling by Lord Roseberry. This wonderful colour slide takes us back to the days when a roundabout managed the flow of traffic at this busy junction.

Pirate at Newhaven?

Thought this was an interesting story about the human remains found at Victoria Primary, Newhaven. It is now believed the remains date to a 16th-C pirate.

A facial reconstruction of the man is seen here along with the skull. Victoria. primary is located close to a 600 year old gibbet which stood close to the harbour.

It is thought the man could have been executed for piracy or other crimes before being buried in a shallow, unmarked grave.

The condition of the bones and location of the burial close to the water and gibbet, rather than in nearby graveyards, suggests he was killed before being displayed to act as a deterrent to other pirates.
