MEET THE AUTHOR - Graham Usher
Graham Usher is the Bishop of Norwich and the Church of England’s lead bishop for the environment. In 2026 he was named as one of the UK’s 100 most influential climate and sustainability leaders. An ecologist by background, he tends to write about spirituality, landscapes and nature. He speaks about environmental legislation and concerns in his role as a Lord Spiritual within the House of Lords. In addition, he is the Lord High Almoner within the Royal Household. He loves being out in nature, especially the Scottish hills, and is a keen beekeeper.

​His book The Way Under Our Feet conveys how exhilarating it is to walk into the depths of our humanity. We become more ready to recognize the needs as well as the joys of others; we sift our thoughts; we seek to heal our battered world, even as we glory in the beauty of nature.

The Leiston Book Festival takes place on Saturday 19 September 2026, at Leiston Film Theatre, which is Suffolk’s oldest surviving cinema, which opened in 1914.

The Suffolk coast has always inspired creativity and innovation. The Leiston Book Festival brings together inspiring writers and enthusiastic readers, for a day of exploration, debate and discovery.

Topics this year will include weather, walking and the ground beneath our feet. We’ll also be encouraged to see seagulls a little differently and this year, for the first time, we’ll be dipping into climate-fiction, which is a new way to explore our changing environment.
