Apparently I don’t know how to just sunbathe… 🎨☀️

A little poolside painting at the Savoy Palace in Funchal, Madeira, because somehow my travel sketchbook and watercolours found their way into the pool bag. 😂

I’m loving sketching Madeira while I’m here. Different colours, different light, beautiful tropical surroundings and time simply to sit and really look.

There’s something rather lovely about creating a quick watercolour travel sketch of exactly what’s in front of you, no pressure for perfection, just capturing a little moment from the holiday. 🌴💦🎨

I didn’t realise it at the time, but maybe I should have trusted my instinct…

Sometimes you need a little reminder to trust your own creative instinct. 🌸

Back in May, I was commissioned by Jo Malone London × John Lewis to hand-paint their iconic luxury gift boxes for a live event.

While developing my ideas, I naturally went towards loose, painterly florals — peonies, poppies, berries, lemons and leaves. I wanted them to feel joyful, luxurious and unmistakably hand-painted.

But I questioned myself.

Was my style right for a luxury brand? Was it too loose? Should I make it more polished?

I trusted my eye and went with it.

Fast-forward a few months and, walking through the airport, I stopped at the Jo Malone London stand and saw their new gift boxes covered in beautiful, bold, painterly florals.

And I had a bit of a moment. 🌸

Not because I’m suggesting they took inspiration from me, absolutely not! 😂

It was the realisation that months earlier, while questioning whether my own floral illustration style was right for luxury packaging and bespoke gifting, my creative instinct had taken me in a direction that now felt completely at home in that world.

And THAT gave me confidence.

As artists, we spend so much time looking outside ourselves for reassurance when perhaps sometimes we simply need to:

Trust your eye.
Trust your hand.
Trust the ideas that arrive before you know where they fit.

Seeing those boxes made me think:

“Laura, you knew what you were doing.”

And I think I needed that reminder. 🌸

Maybe being ahead of yourself sometimes just feels like being unsure of yourself.

Confidence didn’t arrive before I started. The confidence came because I started. 🎨✨

Chapter Three of The Unexpected Journey is now live.

This one takes me right back to my very first exhibition at the Hamlet Court Road Art Trail at Eliza Boutique. I was nervous about putting my artwork out there for people to see… and then I sold four paintings!

That little bit of belief led to joining Southend Art Club, more exhibitions and then Hadleigh Gallery

Looking back at these photographs now, I can see something I couldn’t quite see at the time. I wasn’t simply exhibiting paintings, I was slowly building the confidence to call myself an artist.

As a self-taught artist, I’ve learned that you don’t necessarily wait until you feel ready. Sometimes you take the slightly wobbly first step, put yourself out there and see where it leads.

And goodness, I had no idea where those first steps were going to take me…
