I didn’t set out to become someone who works with textiles, then this year happened!
My word for 2026 is EXPLORE, and one of the most joyful discoveries this year has been finding my way into textiles and dye.
It started with curiosity and a large bucket. I began working with raw linen, using pigments, bleach and raw pigment powders, including the most beautiful marigold yellow I’ve worked with before. The process became its own thing entirely, layering colour, splattering with bleach, dyeing again, adding raw pigment until the linen absorbed everything rather than sitting on top of it. The colour seeps into the cloth. It becomes part of the fabric rather than a surface applied to it, that distinction matters to me.
The result sits somewhere between painting and dyeing, and I’m not sure there’s a better way to describe it than that. I stretched the finished pieces over bars and hung them as a series, and something about seeing them together felt completely right.
Also in the show is a cyanotype wall hanging that combines layers of raw linen with organza, where wild plants were pressed into the fabric and the sun did the rest.
This is what happens when you follow a process without knowing where it’s going. You end up somewhere you couldn’t have planned!
You can see the full series at Squeeze Cafe, Venue 31, during Leigh Art Trail this week. They’ll also be available online from this weekend if you’d like to acquire one. Link in bio. 🌿 DM me if you’d like to know sizes and prices.
If you’ve managed to see them I’d love to know what you think of them!
