Last year I had the pleasure of being the Lead Tutor on the BFI Film Academy course at Broadway Cinema. We had the most lovely group of young filmmakers learning with us and industry professionals teaching with us.

Both films premiered at Flatpack Festival 2026 as part of the Short & Suite strand, showcasing work created by young filmmakers aged 16–25 from across the Midlands.

We're delighted to share that Excel was selected as the winning East Midlands film by the festival jury, including Bridgerton actor Claudia Jessie.

You can now watch both I.R.L. and Excel on the Broadway YouTube channel on the links below:

It’s the first day of production on a film fully developed into production by the Reel People film network in Nottingham. They did fabulously, roll on day two.

PLATFORM started as a series of events for Leicester creatives to meet each other, share work and learn from people already working in the industry.

Over the last 18 months we’ve held short film showcases via Short PLATFORM, pitching nights, idea development and business labs and talks with commissioners, writers, directors, art critics, producers and artists.

People who met through PLATFORM have started collaborating outside the programme. New projects have appeared. People have found crews, collaborators, confidence and, in some cases, a reason to keep going with work that can often feel financially and emotionally unsustainable.

Tonight, three creatives from the PLATFORM community will talk about the work they’re making now and what it actually feels like trying to sustain a creative practice in 2026. The good bits, the exhausting bits, the uncertainty, the side jobs, the small wins. We’ll also revisit some of the advice shared by past PLATFORM guests over the last year and a half and ask what still feels useful now.

We will also be revealing more information and answering any questions you may have regarding The Slate, our collaborative film production initiative. If you are interested in getting involved in the production of three short films, come along this evening.

See you at Phoenix at 18.30.
