Explore national parks while gathering resources and observing wildlife to earn wilderness badges. As the sun sets and night falls, site actions and rewards become more powerful, but that also triggers the last round...

What we liked
πŸ’Ž The artwork is stunning.
πŸ’Ž The list of advised card group set ups depending on what kind of game you wanted, and for how many players.

What we didn't like
πŸͺ¨ The game play didn't feel very exciting at 2 players, perhaps it would have been better at a higher player count with more interaction.
πŸͺ¨ The switch from glittery cubes to drab cardboard for higher sparks points.

Over the course of the game players take on the role of city leaders and will be recruiting powerful anthropomorphic allies to help earn them "sparks" and claim the mantle of the greatest city.

This is an open drafting and set collection game with an impressive amount of variability due to the the large number of different, beautifully illustrated citizen cards available to select from during set up.

There are 30 types of citizens to choose from, however, during any game you will only be using between 7-10 of these sets.

The rule book hosts a number of recommended citizen set-ups for various play styles, or you can draft your own. This ensures plenty of replayability for fans of the game.

Turns are quick, take a set of 3 cards from the central Assembly, add them to your city, then do an action from one of your citizens if you wish. The longer you hold off on performing an action and the more cards of a citizen type you have in your city, the more powerful the actions will be, but this is balanced by having to discard one of the cards in that stack after the action is complete.

Unfortunately, we found that the game wasn't very exciting at 2 players as there wasn't a lot of room for strategising, and due to the ability for your opponent to follow (copy) your action if they have a matching citizen in their city, a lot of our games felt a bit tit-for-tat. We definitely suspect this game will play much better at the higher player counts.

Our only other gripe was that the 10 and 20 points were cardboard, not like the lovely glittery 1 and 2 points cubes.

LIVE ON KICKSTARTER NOW!

We've had the pleasure of seeing this game develop over the last couple of years and since we last had a copy, Leon has done EVEN MORE to upgrade and improve this extremely fun retro love letter to old skool dungeon crawlers.

The illustrations are top notch, the game play will have you shouting in joy as well as despair, and laughing while you repeatedly get beaten by a scorpion (well, in our case anyway 🀣), and Leon is just a super lovely, awesome person.

If you're quick you may even be able to snag yourself a set of the limited custom dice sets (only 50 available!).

We were introduced to Fliptoons from Thunderworks Games back at UKGE in May by a friend who picked it up on a whim and we had an absolute blast after hours in the open gaming area with it. Naturally, we were delighted to get a bit more time hands on with it after the convention courtesy of the UK Board Game Review Circle.

Fliptoons is a compact and quick deck builder the likes of which I haven't really seen before. Rounds are snappy, flip over six cards in a 3x2 grid, triggering their abilities as you go, tally up the "fame" value of your tableau, then each player spends that "fame" to recruit up to two new toons from the card row. That's pretty much it.

The Roger Rabbit/ Golden age of cartoons aesthetic has a certain charm about it, but it's not entirely to everyones taste. There's a theme here about hiring and auditioning toons to cast in an upcoming movie, but it's just a wrapper for the really satisfying gameplay loop.

Over successive rounds you'll tailor your hand of cards in such a way that they synergise well, and rack up big fame points. The first person to get to 30 fame will trigger the end game, this will net you a handy bonus going in to the final flip, but it all comes down to one last hand. Have you got what it takes to make it it on the silver screen?

What we liked
🐰 Unique spin on deck builder games
🐰 Really quick at all player counts
🐰 Lots of cool combos to build

What we didn't like
πŸƒ Art style is a bit polarising (Becki likes it)
πŸƒ Little bit too random at 2 player
πŸƒ Wish it played at more than 4, we know you can now mix in Fliptoons Season 2, but that could just result in a very diluted deck and lead to frustration with the randomness.

This weeks 🎲 theme is STARS ⭐🌟⭐ suggested by .games

We've not posted a Mystery Monday picture for a little while as we've been busy looking after our little star, but we're back and ready to shine!

Carve an empire among the stars! This game of galactic warfare, trade, and diplomacy is one of Stu's favourites, but it is a bit difficult to get to the table. 🌌

Do you know what it is? πŸ€”

A buddy of ours ended up with a spare copy of the gorgeous Moytura from Bitewing Games and just dropped it off for us to have a look at - I must admit I knew almost nothing about this game until recently, but when the art of Harry Conway is involved I'm always interested!

I've played two of the other games in the Mythos Collection (Iliad and Ichor), which this is a part of, I especially enjoyed Iliad for its fast paced and stylised take on the Trojan War. Given our current baby situation, we're short of free time and have been favouring quick, tactical two player games of late and this really appears as though it will scratch that itch, while looking a little meatier than the earlier games in this series. I'm excited to dive in one night this week!

What are your favourite two player games that run in an hour or less?

'26 might be just a distant memory now, but with Drillers right on the horizon we remembered we had recorded this wonderful conversation with a chap called Chris on the stand! He might have spent a little bit too much time in the mines of Antevorta, but he certainly got us excited for the game! CGE give this man a raise!

Drillers is launching at GenCon and shipping preorders from the 30th of July, with retail stock dropping shortly after.

Come and take a quick look inside the Captain Edition of Revenant from

An absolute gorgous production with some really cool upgraded components over the eventual retail version.

If you're feeling the FOMO from the Admiral Edition, all you're really missing is the plastic ships which Mindclash have confirmed will be available separately once they finish fulfilment on the crowdfunding campaign. Although in my honest opinion the dual layer ship boards are lovely in their own right!

I can't wait to get the gang round the table for this one!

Yesterday marked 2 years of The Boardgamer Owens on Instagram, but we are more than just gamers. Here are some of the other things we love!

Staying in wild places, like a bothy or wild camping!

Snowboarding, this is how we met! We were both on the 2023 Billy Snow Mates Bash in Tignes, France and have since been to Italy and Austria.

Climbing, both bouldering and trad!

Hiking and scrambling the hills and mountains of the UK (and Mount Rinjani in Lombok!)

The water - wild swimming, paddleboarding and scuba diving. Becki is getting close to logging 100 dives!

Our little family! Our two dogs, Jessie and Triss, and our wonderful little boy, Elis ❀️
