THEY PAID HIM £250 PER WEEK!
I’ve been speaking to imams ever since I released my drama ‘The Imam’ a couple weeks ago, to ask how they have been treated as imams and the stories I’ve heard are not good.
One imam I spoke to said he was offered £250 per week to run the masjid SubhanAllah! It was the main masjid in this imams city as well by the way. That’s a tragedy on so many levels, he asked the committee who ran the masjid to increase his pay and they said ‘Go on benefits, it will make up the money you need to live on’ AstagfirAllah. The masjid also had the audacity to say, we pay you more than the other main masjid in the city pays its imam!
This imam brother studied for 10 years to become an imam and this is how he gets treated. When he left and moved to another masjid in another city the pay increased to just £350 per week 🤦🏽♂️ He is now working at another masjid but training to become an electrician but he is now in debt due to the new course he is doing, it’s good he is becoming an electrician but he is only doing this as imam roles don’t pay him enough to survive financially and that’s a huge problem.
And then we wonder why our future generation are not wanting to become imams, I’m not saying pay imams football player wages, I’m saying let’s pay them what is reasonable, a wage they can provide for themselves and their family.
We are failing our imams massively and we need to change this mindset that these committees have, where they think they can treat our imams with such disrespect.
