Abstract of North Yorkshire Moors

I tend to represent my native Yorkshire in abstract form because I love the art form but also suffer severe colour blindness, abstraction frees me of the colour rules a more realism based art form would demand. I was mesmerised by the midcentury work of Hornsea Potteries (I visited the site often as a child with my Grandparents, it was in the village of Hornsea on the East Yorkshire coast). My work links to that early admiration and to glorious memories of Mary and Bob, my wonderful late Grandparents.

Titled Emlyn this is a pencil portrait of a miner. The work aims to show the rugged edge of mining and a life spent underground.

I grew up in South Wales when many of the mines were being closed. I met many miners that were retraining while I was undertaking my City and Guilds. I was always and continue to be fascinated by the men that earned a living while working underground.

Title: Last Orders
Size: A1
Medium: Mixed, acrylic paint and inks.

The work uses acrylic paint. I then distress this using sandpaper. This provides the appearance/ feeling of age. When combined with a particular subject area, in this case last orders, it helps in providing the essence of a distant memory. I've always been interested in in old posters and art that is a bit worse for wear, whether by use or by the weather. Last orders is my first real attempt at trying to achieve this and pays homage to the many hours that I spent in public houses when I was in my early twenties. The characters were researched by me and then added after the initial work to distress the acrylic paint. These are applied using acrylic ink.
