DAVID SHWIMMER (EXPERIMENT 003)

When I was painting the ‘Experiment’ pieces, the memories from when I used to draw and design cars, planes and vessels as a child sat prominently in my mind. To anyone that knew me when I was younger know I was mildly obsessed with drawing cars in particular.

Creating these animals was a real design process. I felt it was imperative to create creatures that were balanced, and ergonomically equipped for two of three terrains that animals can roam (land, sky and water).

The shark really encompasses power and when mixed with the flamingo, the sharpness that comes with power is muted and softened to become a more manageable personality to handle; The shark becomes less aggressive, and more 'serene’.

P.S I will have a look to see if I can find some of my old car designs !!

GRAPHICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS (GMO’S)

An introduction to how I designed this art series..

There are a number of themes running through the first series. Topics include traits / personality types that we find attractive; Beauty, Intelligence + Power. Integration with mankind. We explore designed mutation. How would they fair in real life. Would they be Accepted. Celebrated. Despised.

The Mission Statement (Series 1) : In short, this series is an experiment with parameters. The experiment is to design new life (The Experiment) using the animals that already exist (The Parameters). The animals have been chosen specifically based on their abilities (Strengths + Weaknesses), what they represent in the eyes of mankind, and how we treat each species.

THE FIRSTS OF THE GMO SERIES

At school the english teacher would explain the importance of setting the scene. Art is no different, it must tell a story. And it is down to the artist to tell a good one at that. In GMO's, I began the exploration into the attraction (and antipathy) that revolves around Beauty, Intelligence and Power through the animals that are born with these traits. I decided to use the flamingo to represent beauty. An interesting bird to look at with a hue of pink not all too often seen in nature, they are instantly recognisable. They could easily be a representation of beauty being synonymous with the 'head in the clouds' adage and an affliction of naivety. They are notoriously weak and stay in groups to better their chances of survival.

These pieces are 1st and 2nd in the series.

Thanks for such a great response over the weekend, it’s been a real pleasure to read everyones comments!
.So a little bit about how I started this current series. In about 2017, I was in France and came across a stunning photo of a flamingo in a magazine. I kept it and when I got back, cut it out and cropped it. I found that the flat grey/blue backdrop enhanced the image and allowed it to almost pop out of the canvas, creating a striking image. I found an old canvas (2m X 1.2m) that was intended for a completely different project and spent all night painting this image. That painting was the inspiration behind my current series. It became quite a popular image and I have created a small number of versions since.
