When does a mug become your mug?

The weight, the shape of the handle, the thickness of the rim, how it sits in your hand. Small details can make a surprising difference to how a mug feels to use.

These are the sorts of things we talk about in the studio. Recently, though, the conversation took an important turn:

What makes the best biscuit for dipping?

Like mug design, there’s plenty to consider. Biscuit, mug, tea, dipping time. Everyone has their own variables.

It turns out there’s quite a lot to think about when you start paying attention to the details.

If you want to make a mug of your own, our Make a Mug weekend sessions are suitable for beginners. Or come and browse many mugs at our Pottery Market, 31 October & 1 November.

Testing materials is part of understanding how they behave. These tiles show how changing the clay body can change the surface of a glaze.

After a summer supporting ongoing practice through Keep Throwing and Keep Handbuilding, our regular programme returns.

Foundations in Pottery Making six-week courses start next week, followed by Make a Glaze in October.

Supporting learning isn’t simply about providing classes or space. It’s about creating conditions that make it easier for people to keep returning to their practice, even when everything else is competing for their time and attention.

Education, at its best, is transformational. It helps people imagine a future they couldn’t previously see for themselves. Sometimes that happens through a breakthrough at the wheel. Sometimes it’s through finding a community. Sometimes it’s simply because someone makes it easier to keep going when, left to ourselves, we might have stopped.

The next six-week Foundations in Pottery Making courses begin 15 and 16 September.

Glaze isn't just colour. It changes how light moves across a pot, how the surface feels and how the form is read. It can soften a form, emphasise texture and completely change how the finished pot looks. (Sometimes, it can even save a pot you're unsure about.)

Week 6 is about exploring application and making decisions. Then it's all about patience. Waiting to see what happens when clay, glaze and heat meet.
