After 11 years in my studio — a place I’ve worked, taught, repaired kilns, supported others, and built my practice — I’ve been told to leave. All ceramic artists in the building have been given wo months’ notice. that was 4 weeks ago. No discussion. No transition plan. Just “get out.”
I now have four weeks left.
I’ve spent the past month searching for a new space. I’ve viewed so many studios, workshops, and industrial spaces across Leeds. Every single one is above my financial threshold. Rent, VAT, business rates, insurance, service charges… it’s overwhelming.
So I’m left with difficult choices:
• Sell equipment and walk away from ceramics
• Put everything in storage
• Leave it all behind
• Keep searching
• Or share a space with others
I’m choosing the last option because I’m not ready to give up my practice.
There are potential spaces — good ones — but they only work if 2–3 makers come together. And this search has shown me something very concerning: Leeds has almost no provision for makers working with actual materials. The mills and warehouses that once held creative communities are now luxury flats, digital coworking spaces, gentrified for the wealthy artists or derelict shells.
Where are makers supposed to go?
